Niets wees onder keizer Karel V op het ontstaan van twee verschillende landen: de Unie van Utrecht in het Noorden naast de Koninklijke Nederlanden in het Zuiden. De ingewikkelde politieke, sociale en religieuze oorzaken van de Opstand en de scheiding hebben generaties historici in Belgi? en Nederland, en ver daarbuiten hevig ge?ntrigeerd. Toch dringen de verworvenheden van de wetenschappelijke geschied-beoefening slechts langzaam door tot het bredere publiek.
