More than half-century past in 1960, Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914 - 1977), African-Brazilian favela…(slums) resident of Sao Paulo, published her diary (literally written on scraps of paper), published under the title Quarto de Despejo (Child of the Dark), and soon translated into 14 languages. It was a daily record of a poor, unenployed, black, single-mother of 3, subsiting surviving from scrap paper and other cast-offs of city streets. That book's success allowed Carolina & children to leave a shack and move into a cinder-block house of her dreams. This Carolina's 2nd diary. It covers the 1st year following her rise to fame and fortune. Now she struggles with celebrity, middle-class expectations, and the racial and social tensions her success had brought about. Favela life ill prepares one for middle-class "respectability". Carolina Maria de Jesus died, forgotten and in poverty. The fall back into poverty is as easy as the struggle to escape it is hard. Strong copy despite flaws.

Dr. Levin was chairman of the Urban Studies and Planning program at the University of Maryland, College Park from 1978 to 1989. Dr. Levin was well-known for his work in urban studies. He wro…te and edited 12 books, including "Outside Looking In: Immigration and Development," "Ending Unemployment: Space Alternatives for Public Policy" and "Educational Investment in an Urban Society."Dr. Levin earned his bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College. He received his master's degree in sociology in 1949 and a doctoral degree in urban planning in 1959, both from the University of Chicago.He worked as an analyst for Illinois state government and was an economist and urban planning consultant in private practice before starting his academic career.He was director of urban studies at Boston University from 1964 to 1972 and chairman of Rutgers University's Department of Urban Planning and Policy from 1972 to 1978.Dr. Levin moved to Maryland in 1978, when he began working at the University of Maryland. He was president of the American Institute of Certified Planners from 1986 to 1988.In 1980, Dr. Levin called attention to the revitalization of many of Baltimore's neighborhoods by documenting a substantial increase in housing values in older city communities. He said middle-class people were attracted to the 19th-century homes in such neighborhoods as Union Square, Butchers Hill and Mount Vernon.Some of the topics in his writings included unemployment, urban sprawl and other patterns of urban development, community and regional planning and transportation.
