Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Second Edition. PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. TRUE FIRST EDITION< AND A UNIQUE COPY OF A VERY RARE Civil War book published in Charleston in 1899.NOT THE MODERN REPRINT. References: Howes USIANA 544, grade aa, noting only 150 copies. Broadfoot value $1200, but his guide has the date wrong. Not in Nevi…ns nor Eicher. The uniqueness is that this copy belonged to the Byrd family of Hartsville, Darlington County, SC, four of whom served in these units in the war. Alexander F. Byrd was killed in the war, he being the father of Samuel Byrd. On the front blank endpaper there is genealogical information penned in listing several other members of the Byrd family with birth and death dates, including Samuel. The preface by the author states that the book was conceived at a meeting held by the survivors of the units, in Hartsville, on July 24, 1885. So Broadfoot seems wrong on the date, Howes correct. As to condition: The book needs new covers, rebinding. The text is complete, paper lightly tanned with age, and several penned notes adding information. Very little foxing, very occasional light spots. Both hinges showing but holding, with binding otherwise tight. Rear blank end paper gone. The covers, which as noted need replacing, are spotted and soiled, gilt title barely visible, corners and spine ends rubbed. It is as it is. Save it! Shelved in glass Indian case.

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good+ binding. First Edition. 12mo. 210 pp. First edition, limited to 150 copies. Signed and inscribed by Coker. As issued, in gray boards with title in gilt on the front cover and spine; light soiling and a touch of shelf rubbing at the spine, but generally, a very nice copy; light and even toning to the pa…ges; one line of text has been effaced on p. 195 with editorial addition of a period to suggest this might have been done by the printer? The 9th South Carolina was disbanded in 1862, and those soldiers were formed into the 6th South Carolina. James was in the 9th and 6th regiments and fought in both Bull Runs, Harpers Ferry, Antietam, and others. He was on Lookout Mountain during the Battle of Chickamagua when he was wounded, concluding his military career. But, as Douglas Southall Freeman writes, Coker "became one of the greatest industrialists of the South, founded Coker College, [and] brought new hope to agriculture in the Carolinas" (p. 149). This copy is signed and inscribed by Coker to his nephew, Frank W. Coker at Princeton University and is dated 1910. Francis Coker was a political scientist and taught both at Princeton and Yale. A rare Confederate regimental history with a very nice family association. Howes notes that only 150 copies were printed. Howes C-554, "aa," Dornbusch II, 912; Turnbull IV, p. 394; Freeman, Douglas Southall, The South to Posterity (1951). Signed.

In den Warenkorb210pp, as issued. Publisher's gray cloth [light soil], front board and spine stamped in gilt (spine dulled]. Inner front hinge cracked but boards firm. Mild occasional foxing. Very Good. This first edition of this rare South Carolina regimental history. Coker dedicates it "to the descendants of those who loved, and fought to est…ablish the Confederate States of America. 'No nation rose so white and fair / Or fell so pure of crimes'." During Coker's Confederate service, he fought at First and Second Manassas, the Battle at Malvern Hill, Harper's Ferry, and Antietam. His military career ended at Chickamauga in October 1863, when he was wounded and became a prisoner of war. After the War Coker [1837-1918] founded the Sonoco Products Company and was noted for his philanthropy. Howes, who rated this 'aa' for scarcity in the early 1960s, says only 150 copies were printed. Howes C554aa. II Dornbusch 912. IV Turnbull 394. Not in Nevins, LCP.
