apparently contemporary full calf binding, front board and endpaper detached, spine in five panels gilt-decorated in French style, corners bumped, wear to leather panels, illustrated by frontispiece and four portraits of French Royals, all much foxed around edges, small piece (previous owner's name, presumably), clipped from top edge of title page, text block otherwise sound and clean in this large-paper production with generous margins. The author (1738 - 1813) was at one time considered the French Virgil, and was much praised by Voltaire, but his poetic reputation fell considerably in later times. He composed this work during the reign of Robespierre, and completed it while abroad in exile. It was published in France after his return in 1802 as 'La Piti', but according to the notes in this edition, had been severely tampered with by the censors of the Consulate. De Lille sold the manuscript to the present editors, who published this first complete edition in London, with plentiful notes, without consulting the author. Pages: xxviii, 199, The poem finishes on page 121, the rest is the notes and commentary.

Full morocco. Zustand: Very Good. Fourth edition. Fourth edition. An engraved frontispiece and title page vignette by Corbin after Laurent, large octavo, pp viii, 141,(i), all edges gilt, a small marginal stain to the lower corners of the frontispiece and title page, a contemporary name of Sundorne on the title page, otherwise just a little age-toned internally, marbled endpapers, bound in a fine straight-grain green morocco, gilt decoration at the borders, inner dentelles gilt, the spine gilt decorated, a little scuffed rubbed and marked, the spine a little dull. The page size is 14 x 23 cms, so this seems to be an unusal large paper copy. It is certainly very generously margined. [With the bookplate of John Corbet, 1751-1817, of the Sundorne Estate, who was an English sportsman of the Shropshire landed gentry and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1775 to 1780. This copy was purchased by myself from Rosemary Verey in February 1997, following a very good fish lunch which she had cooked. Unfortunately it is without her signature.] Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. First Edition. Hardcover 1st, a very nice copy in contemporary leather. Mottled leather with triple-rule border, dentelles, marbled endpapers, edges gilted over red stain, giving a coppery effect. All text pages are bright, straight and clean. The gilted edges are a bit dulled, as is the gilt-stamped spine. Corners bumped and worn; there is a gilt rule on the very edge of the boards, and it is rubbed or broken in numerous places. Overall vg+ despite the wear on the binding. Engraved frontis and title vignette; different from the vignette in the Valade-Cazin edition published later the same year. A poem outlining the author's philosophy of outdoor design, this book was terribly popular and went through many printings and translations very quickly. It was a major influence on British garden design which can still be detected today. 143 pp. French text.
