Brossura. Zustand: nuovo. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Pp. 1860-1867. Original wrappers. Pencil drawing of a chemical structure on blank verso of p. 1867. Very Good. First Edition. Quoting an excerpt from the online Pauling Blog, "Pauling v. Wrinch": "Dorothy Wrinch's 1937 American tour brought her, and her highly controversial cyclol hypothesis, into the public consciousness. She attracted a lot of attention, but mistook that attention for firm support. Thus buoyed, she began making outsized claims as to the importance of her theory and, more importantly, false claims that it had already been scientifically proven. Wrinch's rhetoric caused many of her friends and colleagues to distance themselves from her and her ideas. And when Pauling ultimately agreed to meet with Wrinch in Ithaca, New York, the gloves came off: Pauling slammed her ideas as plainly ridiculous, more fancy than fact. . . . Linus Pauling and Carl Niemann officially got in on the act with their publication of 'The Structure of Proteins' in the July 1939 issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society [offered here]. In it, the authors declared that Wrinch's cyclol cage was so thermodynamically unstable that it couldn't even be produced in a lab intentionally, let alone be found in nature. . . ." (The whole blog about Pauling and Wrinch is well worth reading). Quoting Wikipedia about Pauling's co-author Carl Niemann: "After his work at the Rockefeller Institute and at the University College Hospital as a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow, and with strong support from Warren Weaver, Niemann joined Linus Pauling's Crellin Laboratory at CalTech in 1938. In 1939, Niemann and Linus Pauling published a strong critique [offered here] of Dorothy Wrinch's cyclol hypothesis of protein structure, which held that globular proteins formed inter-linked, cage-like polyhedral structures. Niemann and Pauling argued that X-ray crystallography and other data indicated that cyclol bonds did not occur in proteins and that polypeptides were held together in globular proteins by hydrogen bonds and weaker intermolecular forces.".
