Il n¿échappa cependant pas à l¿attention de Ricci, qui reconnut son caractère novateur et qui cite 38 fois Colombat dans son ouvrage « One hundred years of gynaecology ». Ce traité est essentiellement consacré aux « maladies des femmes », la partie consacrée à l¿hygiène ne comportant que 45 pages. Il témoigne d¿une grande érudition (plus de mille auteurs sont cités) et renferme de nombreuses idées originales. Les planches illustrent des instruments. L¿ouvrage fut traduit en anglais, en 1845.

Première et seule édition, très rare. Ce dictionnaire encyclopédique devait être publié par livraisons, mais seule la première a paru (A-Anévrisme). Comme l'indiqua Gaujot," il fut conçu d'après un plan un peu trop vaste". Les principales rubriques de ce remarquable ouvrage, très documenté et richement illustré, sont les suivantes : Accouchement (51 pp., 10 planches), Acupuncture (7 pp.), Amputation (57 pp., 5 planches), Anévrysme (28 pp., 5 planches). Le dernier article, sur l'anévrisme, apparait inachevé, mais cet exemplaire est bien complet, la collation étant similaire à celle des quatre exemplaires recensés au CCfr. Chaque rubrique est suivie d'une importante bibliographie. Colombat indique dans l'avant-propos qu'il eut recours non seulement aux traités et dictionnaires, mais aussi à de rares manuscrits, à des collections de thèses, journaux, et aux instruments du coutelier Charrière et à ceux de la collection de Jules Cloquet. Les planches, précieuses, illustrent de très nombreux instruments. Marc Colombat de l'Isère (1797-1851), originaire de Vienne, fut un médecin particulièrement ingénieux. Il inventa un très grand nombre d'instruments et se fit remarquer par ses études sur le bégaiement, et par celles concernant la chirurgie gynécologique et urinaire.

Juli 1798 zu Vienne (Isère) geboren, studirte zuerst die Rechte in Grenoble, musste, in politische Angelegenheiten verwickelt, nach Savoyen und der Schweiz fluchten, wurde 1824 amnestirt, und studirte darauf Medicin in Montpellier, Strassburg und Paris. Sein mechanisches Talent führte ihn auf die Erfindung verschiedener Instrumente, z. B. eines solchen zur Amputation der Portio vaginalis uteri, das er in der folgenden Schrift: "De l'hystérotomie, ou l'amputation du col de la matrice dans les affections cancéreuses, . avec la description de l'hystérotome et de plusieurs autres instrumens etc." (Paris 1828) beschrieb. Auch beschäftigte er sich in derselben Zeit mit "De la compression et de la ligature des vaisseaux" (Paris 1828) und einer "Nouvelle méthode de pratiquer la taille sous-pubienne" (1830). Lebenslang aber wendete er dem Stottern seine Aufmerksamkeit zu, und indem er ganz richtig den nervösen Charakter des Leidens erkannte, suchte er dasselbe durch ein Verfahren zu bekämpfen, bei welchem besonders auf rhythmische Aussprache der Worte Werth gelegt wurde. Er hatte zur Aufnahme von Zöglingen ein orthophonisches Institut errichtet und erzielte in demselben solche Erfolge, dass ihm von der Akademie der Wissenschaften 1833 ein Preis von 50.000 Franken zuerkannt wurde.
