Den Auftakt bildete 1991 die Emanuel Hoffmann-Stiftung in Basel, eine in den 3oer Jahren gegründete und seitdem kontinuierlich erweiterte Sammlung der Moderne, die zum ersten Mal außerhalb der Schweiz in einer essentiellen Auswahl in Deutschland zu sehen war. 1994 folgte die Ausstellung ?temporary translation(s) - Sammlung Schürmann - Kunst der Gegenwart und Fotografie", ein unkonventionelles Ensemble der jüngsten Kontext-Kunst, 1996 die umfangreiche Schau "Sammlung Sonnabend - Von der Popart bis heute", mit der ein umfangreiches Konvolut vorwiegend amerikanischer Kunst nach 196o in Hamburg präsentiert wurde und, ein Jahr später, die nicht minder beträchtliche Sammlung Fröhlich. Mit der Ausstellung "Die Rache der Veronika - Aktuelle Perspektiven der zeitgenössischen Fotografie" zeigten die Deichtorhallen 1998 eine der originärsten Fotosammlungen, die ?Lambert Art Collection" aus Genf mit mehr als 3oo Prints von Marcel Duchamp bis Matthew Barney. Unter dem Titel "Zeichen der Moderne" wurde im gleichen Jahr eine Auswahl aus den Beständen der süddeutschen Sammlung Würth und im Kontrast dazu ausgewählte Partien der Münchner Privatsammlung Goetz: "Emotion - Junge britische und amerikanische Kunst" präsentiert. Die jetzige Ausstellung "Vom Eindruck zum Ausdruck - Grässlin Collection" führt die 1991 begonnene Reihe fort. Damit wird ein von den bisher gezeigten Sammlungen weitgehend differierender Typus des Kunstsammelns vorgestellt. Denn die "Grässlin Collection" kann man eher als Gruppenunternehmen, als eine Art kollektives Werk sehen, an dem die fünf Familienmitglieder - Anna, Thomas, Sabine, Bärbel und Karola Grässlin - beteiligt sind und in dem sich die unterschiedlichen Positionen der Beteiligten widerspiegeln. Wie stark diese Positionen sind und wie vehement sie auch vertreten werden, konnte ich in den Diskussionen über die Auswahl der Werke für die Hamburger Ausstellung erfahren - nicht ohne Gewinn, denn gerade diese Gespräche haben das Inhaltliche und auch das Essentielle des jeweils diskutierten Werks zu Tage gefördert. Der Titel der Schau, "Vom Eindruck zum Ausdruck" ist einem Gemälde von Martin Kippenberger aus dem Jahr 1981 entliehen, mit dem die traditionelle Vorstellung von der Entstehung des Kunstwerks ironisch ins Gegenteil verkehrt wird. Zugleich markiert das Bild die Entstehungszeit des neueren Teils der Grässlinschen Sammlung, dem die jetzige Ausstellung gewidmet ist. Die Wurzeln des mehr als i000 Einzelposten umfassenden Kunstbesitzes liegen in der Nachkriegszeit. Als Sammler der "Informellen Malerei" und des süddeutschen Konstruktivismus haben der 1976 früh verstorbene Unternehmer Dieter Grässlin und seine Frau Anna im badischen St. Georgen ein respektables Ensemble der Kunst nach 195o zusammengetragen. Bedeutende Werke von Wols, Fontana, K. 0. Götz, Sonderborg und anderen haben Eingang in die Sammlung gefunden. BODY CHECK presents two illustrious artists of the late 20th century who, in an era dominated by abstract painting and nascent political correctness, ventured to spotlight in their artistic work the human body, primarily their own. In their depictions, they stage both the female and male body in a grotesque manner, theatrically dramatizing the torso as well as the limbs, head, eyes, hands, and feet. Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) articulated this humorous grotesque discourse across the decades as an artistic means of expression fraught with self-irony and also as a feminist weapon. The self is presented as torso, as animal, with prostheses, or in a permanent state of organic metamorphosis. Martin Kippenberger's (1953-1997) paintings, sculptures, and drawings are pervaded by an enigmatic spirit of the grotesque, in which comical touches and dark humor evoke the painful, even tragic experience of a world where no one is prepared to help anyone else. The self, one's own body, is allegorically caught up in, or fragmented by, artifacts and linguistic constructs. Salvation is a utopia. Lassnig and Kippenberger never met, even though Kippenberger, a native of the Rhineland, made his home in his latter years in the southern part of the Austrian province of Burgenland, not far from Lassnig's home in the province of Carinthia. The kinship between the two artists' choice of motifs is thus all the more striking. Kippenberger most probably saw exhibitions of Lassnig's work (Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, 1985), and vice versa, after his early death and the growing awareness of his oeuvre, his Austrian colleague evidently studied it closely. In BODY CHECK, body images by the two exceptional artists spanning two decades are now brought together.
