Paperback. Zustand: New. The Iron Curtain remains an iconic representation of the Cold War. But what was it really on the ground? Fortified borders to prevent citizens from leaving emerged first in the interwar USSR and then in socialist post-WW II Europe. Fortifications occurred both at borders between socialist states and at t…heir external boundaries to the non-socialist world, but not in all cases. The most well-known case - the Berlin Wall - was both an extreme example as well as a latecomer. But since 1947, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia had fortified their borders to prevent exit. When East Germany started to build walls around West Berlin and at its borders to West Germany in the 1960s, Yugoslavia was already dismantling its border regime and Hungary was granting passports and exit visas to its citizens. Fortified borders also appeared at external borders in northern and southeastern Europe, in the Caucasus, and in Asia.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Cold War defections were highly public spectacles, often dominating headlines for weeks and fuelling propaganda about the irresistible allure of freedom. Yet only a minority of defectors were political dissidents before leaving; despite how they may have publicly represented their actions, mos…t defectors crossed borders for reasons ranging from economic opportunity to a spur-of-the-moment decision.Cold War Defectors redefines the political and personal stakes of defection, a complex and historically specific Cold War phenomenon that largely came to an end with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The first part of the book traces citizens from the communist East who fled to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, often at great personal risk and from unexpected locations across the globe. The second part turns to other key waypoints of defection Berlin, Hong Kong, and Vietnam where movement occurred in both directions and on a striking scale. Together the chapters reveal a wide range of individual experiences and government responses, showing how states struggled to distinguish refugees, migrants, and defectors. They also highlight the role of non-state actors, the framing power of the media, and the agency of defectors themselves, whether they were elite insiders trading political or cultural capital for asylum or ordinary individuals navigating familiar tropes of Cold War escape.Spanning multiple continents and linking defection to espionage, intelligence, and media culture, Cold War Defectors presents a riveting portrait of what it meant to switch sides in a divided world. Zustand: Very Good. Softcover in pictorial wraps, 375 pages, maps. A decade after the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China established their formidable alliance in 1950, escalating public disagreements between them broke the international communist movement apart. In The Sino-Soviet Split, Lorenz Lüthi tells the story… of this rupture, which became one of the defining events of the Cold War. Identifying the primary role of disputes over Marxist-Leninist ideology, Lüthi traces their devastating impact in sowing conflict between the two nations in the areas of economic development, party relations, and foreign policy. The source of this estrangement was Mao Zedong's ideological radicalization at a time when Soviet leaders, mainly Nikita Khrushchev, became committed to more pragmatic domestic and foreign policies. Using a wide array of archival and documentary sources from three continents, Lüthi presents a richly detailed account of Sino-Soviet political relations in the 1950s and 1960s. He explores how Sino-Soviet relations were linked to Chinese domestic politics and to Mao's struggles with internal political rivals. Furthermore, Lüthi argues, the Sino-Soviet split had far-reaching consequences for the socialist camp and its connections to the nonaligned movement, the global Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Clean copy. Record # 401069.

Paperback. Zustand: New. What was the Cold War that shook world politics for the second half of the twentieth century? Standard narratives focus on Soviet-American rivalry as if the superpowers were the exclusive driving forces of the international system. Lorenz M. Lüthi offers a radically different account, restoring agency to… regional powers in Asia, the Middle East and Europe and revealing how regional and national developments shaped the course of the global Cold War. Despite their elevated position in 1945, the United States, Soviet Union and United Kingdom quickly realized that their political, economic, and military power had surprisingly tight limits given the challenges of decolonization, Asian-African internationalism, pan-Arabism, pan-Islamism, Arab-Israeli antagonism, and European economic developments. A series of Cold Wars ebbed and flowed as the three world regions underwent structural changes that weakened or even severed their links to the global ideological clash, leaving the superpower Cold War as the only major conflict that remained by the 1980s.
