Verlag: Sebastiano Manilio, and Stephanus and Bernardinus di Nallis 14 April 1494, Venice, 1494
Anbieter: Phillip J. Pirages Rare Books (ABAA), McMinnville, OR, USA
First Edition in Italian. 320 x 205 mm. (12 1/2 x 8"). 6 p.l., 170 leaves. Single column, 42 lines, roman type.Translated by Sebastiano Manilio. 18th century sprinkled calf, joints renewed, raised bands, spine compartments with gilt quatrefoil, later red morocco label. Moss II, 591; Goff S-382; BMC V, 545; ISTC is00382000. â The leather used for rejointing now beginning to lift, short crack at head of front joint, paper along front hinge separated (with the board beginning to wobble), leather with a few scratches and other minor problems. First quire a little soiled with slightly frayed fore edges, first leaf with blank corner replaced and with a four-inch arching tear into text (but no loss), n3 with repaired curving diagonal tear nearly the length of the page (three or four words affected, but no meaning lost), final leaf rather browned and with repaired marginal tear; unsightly at beginning and end, but quite pleasing in between, the text there being consistently fresh and clean. This is the first appearance in Italian of Seneca's "Moral Epistles," a major resource for Stoic teachings that appeared in 25 incunabular editions following the editio princeps in 1475. These 124 letters, written late in the philosopher's life, spend much time on death, illness, and aging, but also discuss friendship, travel, study, and pleasure. The letters are notable for their conversational tone, and translator Sebatiano Manilio sought to preserve this by using the Tuscan vernacular for his Italian version. Manilio (fl. 1492-1504) was a classicist educated in Rome who worked for a number of Venetian publishers, producing Latin and Italian translations of several works, ranging from the "De Animalibus" of Aristotle to Ketham's "Fascisculus Medicinae." Our Seneca is the only work for which he also served as co-publisher. It was the first book published by the di Nallis brothers, who only issued two other works, both of which were printed by another pair of brothers, Joannes and Gregorius de Gregoriis. This is an uncommonly seen book in even reasonably good condition.

8vo, ff.[10]; with historiated white-on-black woodcut border to title; some staining to the outer margin of the first three leaves leading to some paper loss in f.[2] limited to the margin and repaired, a few inconsequential spots; a very good copy in modern cloth-backed boards; copiously annotated with interlinear notes and marginalia, including two extensive notes on title and on verso of last leaf, all in the same contemporary hand.An extensively annotated copy of a very rare early sixteenth-century edition of this successful tract of moral philosophy. Whilst its entire manuscript tradition was unanimous in attributing this work to Seneca, and eminent scholars with a profoundly intimate knowledge of Senecan philosophy and style, such as Petrarch and Erasmus, endorsed this attribution, the authorship became disputed in the late Renaissance. Today it is generally considered a genuine Senecan work, or a collection of his maxims. Stoicism as a disregard for life's passing goods and as a remedy against fears, particularly the fear of death, is the message condensed in these pithy, memorable sentences and succinct explanations. The contemporary annotator's attention for the name and birthplace of the author indicates that he believed this manual to be by Seneca. Taking advantage of the copy's large line spacing and generous margins, designed to allow annotation and wider study, our reader has covered every page with dense interlinear and marginal notes. Amongst the fears to which the annotator devotes most space are that of death whilst travelling, death in youth, lack of burial; perhaps more unusually, fear of exile is explored more keenly than the fear of poverty or loss of riches; fear of blindness and fear of losing one's wife elicit more comments than the fear of losing one's children, or friends. The marginalia amplify the reflection through quotations from or reference to other authors, including ancient medical writings, Juvenal, Horace, Virgil, and the wider Senecan corpus. The manuscript complement as a whole offers an insight into the broader set of references marshalled in early sixteenth-century understanding of Stoical, classical moral philosophy, as opposed to explicitly Christian maxims, here generally absent. USTC finds only three copies of this edition, all in Germany, to which VD16 and OCLC add one further each, both also in Germany. We can find no copies recorded in the UK or US. Schweiger II, 921; VD16 S-5800. Language: Latin.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Engraved title page, [4C6], 917p, [16] Contemporary full mottled calf rebacked, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label, marbled edges. Later end papers. Complete with the engraved portrait of Sir Thomas Egerton not often found in other copies. Separate title pages for the Epistles and Tracts, both dated 1613. Thomas Lodge (c. 1557 ? 1625) was an English writer and medical practitioner. This is the first complete edition in English of the moral and philosophical essays of Seneca and includes Justius Lipsius life of Seneca. This copy includes the four preliminary leaves "Epistola" and Latin verses headed "In Momum" not found in all copies. See Pforzheimer p646-647 and STC#22213."In most copies b1-3 and b6 are missing. From the Library of Charles Montagu, Lord Halifax (1661-1715) with his bookplate affixed on the verso of the title page. Montagu was a prominent politician for 25 yeas following the revolution of 1688.So in some sense, not surprising to find a dedication copy of the Seneca with his provenance. Moss II p586, Lowndes p2241; Brueggemann p652. Evidence of damp staining to final two-thirds of text block. Lower corner of penultimate leaf torn, just touching border. Light wear to board edges. A very good and scarce dedication copy with a distinguished provenance.

Folio. 140 ff. With four-part woodcut border and 10 woodcuts in the text, as well as several woodcut initials. Later half vellum with marbled covers and ms. title to spine. Pretty edition of Seneca's tragedies, edited by Girolamo Avanzi, Gellio Bernardino Marmitta, and Daniel Caietanus. "Reproduces the 1510 edition" (cf. Schweiger). "Texte encadré par le commentaire [.] Page du titre: encadrement ornemental avec fond de hachures obliques et figures de deux daupins affrontés sur les côtés. - Dans le texte: dix vignettes d'une taille rude et grossière" (Essling). The dolphins (four of them, in fact) are cleverly hidden within the ornaments of the woodcut border. Each play is prefixed by an unsophisticated, but prettily designed Renaissance woodcut. A few interspersions in an appealingly cut Greek type. - Slight edge tear to f. 16. Some wrinkling to gutter throughout. Faded 17th century ownership to title page. Some fingerstaining to margins early on, otherwise a very clean and crisp copy from the collection of the steel industrialist Giacomo Galtarossa (b. 1916), president of the Associazione industriali della provincia di Verona (his etched bookplate on front pastedown). - BM-STC Italian 621. Folio (14 x 9 2/8 inches). Vignette title-page printed in red and black, wood-engraved head-pieces and initials (some occasionally heavy spotting and browning towards the end of the volume). Contemporary calf, each cover decorated with a gilt wreath incorporating small thistles (rebacked and quite worn). First edition thus, with the notes of Lipius. Including works by both Seneca the Elder and Seneca the Younger, and with the 16th-17th-century commentaries of Denis Godefroy (1549 1622), Carolus Albertus, Nicolaus Faber, and Adreas Schottus (1552 1629). Seneca the Younger was arguably Rome s leading intellectual figure in the mid-1st century CE and with Sextus Afranius Burrus (1 - 62), virtual ruler of the Roman world between the years 54 and 62, during emperor Nero s reign, although Nero was to eventually command Seneca s suicide. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
