Rare et précieuse ÉDITION ORIGINALE de l'importante publication posthume de l'expédition scientifique menée sous la direction du duc de Luynes dans le bassin de la Mer Morte. Scientifique féru de peinture et d'archéologie, le duc de Luynes (1802-1867) avait conçu dès 1861 le projet d'explorer le bassin de la Mer Morte. Il s'assura le concours scientifique du géologue Louis Lartet et du naturaliste Combe, ainsi que la collaboration de Louis Vignes (1831-1896), qui était à la fois le photographe et le marin de l'expédition. À partir de 1863, Luynes, qui ne peut plus participer à l'expédition, s'associe à l'architecte Christophe Mauss, restaurateur, entre autres, du Dôme du Saint-Sépulcre de Jérusalem, et au photographe Henry Sauvaire (1831-1896). Ce dernier a étudié la langue arabe dans les Écoles d'Orient de Marseille; il a vécu au Liban et s'est consacré à l'étude des dialectes locaux, avant de revenir en France où il a appris la photographie. Le premier volume du Voyage d'exploration comprend le récit du voyage de Luynes, de Marseille à Beyrouth et Jérusalem, sur les rives de la Mer Morte, aux royaumes d'Ammon et Moab, dans le désert de Judée, l'Arabah, au bord de la Mer Rouge et à Pétra, puis d'Hébron à Jaffa. Le second volume, contient, d'une part, le récit de Vignes "de Pétra à Palmyre", d'autre par le rapport de Mauss et Sauvaire, "Voyage de Jérusalem à Karak et à Chaubak". Enfin, le troisième volume est consacré aux études géologiques de Louis Lartet, illustrées de cartes, coupes géologique et planches en lithographie de minéraux et de fossiles. L'objectif photographique de l'expédition était primordial aux yeux de Luynes. Très précocement, le duc avait porté son intérêt sur ce procédé et avait contribué à son développement, notamment en organisant, sous l'égide de la jeune Société Française de Photographie, deux concours en 1856 : le "petit concours", pour récompenser les meilleures recherches sur la stabilité des épreuves, et le "grand concours", sur les procédés photomécaniques. C'est à l'occasion de ce dernier que Luynes fit la rencontre du fameux photographe Charles Nègre (1820-1880), auquel il confia l'impression des photographies de son expédition selon le nouveau procédé de son invention, la photogravure sur acier : les 64 photographies de la première partie du volume de planches sont reproduites par Nègre de cette manière. En tout, l'illustration du Voyage d'exploration à la Mer Morte offre 78 planches photographiques, reproduisant 60 clichés de Vignes, 12 de Jardin et 6 de Sauvaire. In den WarenkorbRare complete set, conspicuously well-preserved, of "the first systematic attempt to survey and photograph the geological features and cities of the Dead Sea basin in present-day Jordan, the expedition was among the most important scientific and archaeological missions of the 19th century" (Getty). Parr and Badger describes the…portfolio as "one of the finest photo-mechanically printed books of the era". This monumental work is notable for the 64 high-quality photogravure plates of the portfolio, among the earliest published photographs of Jordan and the Dead Sea basin. In 1856, de Luynes had sponsored a competition with the Societe Française de Photographie to discover the best and most practical system of photo-mechanically reproducing photographs, an initiative that is credited with launching the development of the photobook. One of the participants in the contest was Charles Nègre, and although he did not win the 7,000-franc prize, de Luynes selected him in 1865 to reproduce the photographs by Vignes and Jardin, published in this official account of the expedition, paying him 23,250 francs for the commission. The duc de Luynes (1802-1867) inherited an immense fortune and spent his life conducting scientific, archaeological and artistic pursuits. On this privately-funded 1864 expedition he was accompanied by Louis Vignes, a career naval officer, who served as the expedition's photographer, as well as the distinguished geologist Louis Lartet, who would go on to discover the first Cro-Magnon skeletons. Voyage d'exploration a la Mer Morte was published posthumously and seen through the press by de Luynes's grandson, the ninth duke, and the Comte de Vogüé. Volume I comprises de Luynes's own narrative; the second, Vignes's account of Petra and Palmyra, coupled with that of a separate expedition, also sponsored by de Luynes, from Jerusalem to Karak and Chaubak (Shoubak, site of the crusader castle of Montréal), by the archaeologist Christophe Edouard Mauss and the photographer and Arabist Henri Sauvaire; volume III comprises geological observations by Lartet.
