Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Thus. Hardback. Napoleon and the Restoration of the Bourbons. Very slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Title on front D/J. slightly faded. The discovery and publication of a lost work by Lord Macaulay is a major event in histiography. This first section of a projected History of France From the Restoration of the Bourbons to the Accession of Louis Philippe was written by Macaulay in 1831, shortly after the July Revolution of 1830, which he had witnessed at first hand in Paris. Apart from a moment in the 1860s when it was seen by Macaulay's nephew and biographer George Otto Trevelyan, the unfinished text disappeared from view. As recently as 1966 the great biblographer, the late A. N. I. Munby, called it one of 'those introuvables' that bring despair to scholars and collectors. But the text in fact survived, as a forgotten page proof in the Longman archives, and is now published for the first time. Although it is a fragment of an uncompleted whole, and although there are a few gaps in the surviving material, the text in fact presents a continuous and unified account of Napoleon's regime and the brief restoration of Louis XVIII leading up to the Battle of Waterloo. It was planned as the prelude to a full description of the events of 1830; and, while that project was eventually abandoned, this cimpleted section has nevertheless a unity and coherence of its own. 117 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
