The American-built landing ship was a vessel of the most functional design and primitive construction. Genuinely "bathtub-like" in concept and shape whese ships landed hundreds of thousands of men and machines on the shores of occupied Europe, Africa and other World War II theatres. Unarmed and wretchedly open to attack, they often represented the only means of getting heavy armour ashore and were that important to the various landings.
