The first edition of this report by leading hydrologist and namesake of the 'Hurst Exponent', Harold Edwin Hurst and Murdoch MacDonald, who was responsible for the first stages of the Giza irrigation scheme and went on to become adviser to Egypt's Minister of Public Works.An authors' presentation copy of this work, with the inscription 'F. Newhouse Esg. Khartoum, with the authors' compliments' to the head of the front wrap. This work is from the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan.Illustrated with a folding plate featuring graphs displaying quantities of discharge from the Nile.This work discusses the methods of measuring the discharge and volume of water flowing through the Nile in the region of the Assuan - or Aswan - dam, a gravity masonry buttress dam found to be inadequate for development needs and raised nine metres between 1929 and 1933 under the supervision of MacDonald.This work also contains an excerpt of proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Vol. ccxii, Session 1920-1921, Part II. This is a very scarce publication from the Institution, the first professional engineering body formed in the early nineteenth century, and one of many works published by them. Publisher's original front wrap detached, with rear wrap absent. Edgewear to front wrap, with authors' inscription to wrap head. Internally, binding significantly strained between gatherings. 2 volumes, folio, pp. ix, [7], 262; volume II is a portfolio containing 16 loose folding plates, plans, surveys and maps (some in color); folding color frontispiece map in volume I, 7 tables (6 folding), numerous tables and graphs in the text; original printed green paper-covered boards, green cloth shelfbacks which are cracked, chipped, and on the second volume, loose; but the text and all the illustrative material are fine throughout. Murdoch (1866-1957) a civil engineer, assistant engineer on the first Aswan Dam project, director-general of irrigation for the Egyptian Government, subsequently Under Secretary of State for Public Works, and finally adviser to Egypt's Minister of Public Works, served in Egypt for 23 years. He was responsible for the planning and completion of overall drainage schemes for lower Egypt which finally dealt with about 3,000,000 acres. He also designed the Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile, and put into operation the first stages of the Gezira irrigation schemes for the conversion of virgin land in the Sudan for cotton growing. His detailed report, Nile Control, published in 1920, was an early valuable guide to the effective water resource management of the Nile.
