The books in this series were originally published between 1932 and 1941. Almost all of the books were later revised (sometimes more than once) at some point, by various writers. The intent was to remove socially unacceptable stereotypes. Ironically, later books became much more violent. It is accepted that MacFarlane wrote the first sixteen books, which includes six from this set. Subsequent books were written by a team, collectively known as Franklin W. Dixon. This is a fine set in the original slipcase.

The first book is MacFarlane's study of social life in the South of Italy which originally appeared in the Penny Magazine between 1834 and 1845, and covers carnivals, horse-racing, maccaroni-eaters, the peasantry, wandering Italians, gipsies, shepherds etc, and the second title is an 1848 printing of Wilhelm Wittich's travels along the western coast of Norway written in a series of seven letters. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age but the leather is rubbed and scuffed to the corners and joints. The inner binding is sound and the pages are clean.

Pusey dated Sept. 10, 1863 with "Wilmington, Delaware" written in pencil below; about Very Good. Laid in are six pages of manuscript notes, presumably in Pusey's hand, detailing his experiments for an "Improvised Apparatus for Steam Boiler Trials," and "Testing Steam Engines by the amount of heat carried off by the Condensing water." Though undated and unsigned, this appears to matchthe ownership signature of Charles Pusey, detailing his experiments and mathematical equations. Founded in 1848, Wilmington-based Pusey and Jones was a major shipbuilder during the Civil War all the way through World War II. Charles W. Pusey, son of the founder, later became President of Pusey and Jones and was lauded in one 1900 newspaper account as one of Wilmington's foremost businessmen and a mechanical engineer of note, having written several treatises for scientific journals.
