Covers slightly bowed, as the book has been pressed down after being water-soaked. Some "crinkling" of ;leaves remains, as does light staining to some sections of the book, largely confined to wide margins. Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, 7th Baronet (1780-1848) was a Scottish geologist, chemist, agricultural improver, and author perhaps best known for "Travels in the Island of Iceland" (1807).

Additional engravings in the text. Rebound in quarter-leather and brown cloth. Approximately 10 text pages with significant foxing, otherwise very clean. A chemist and geologist by training, Mackenzie 1780-1848) traveled to Iceland with the physicians Henry Holland (1788-1873) and Richard Bright (1789-1858), both of whom made constributions to this book. First published in 1811, it describes the natural history of the island and the history, literature, and diseases of its people. This edition has some revisions to the geological observations and interpretation as well as some new material in the Appendix. Abbey Travel 160 (first edition).

Second Edition. Mackenzie, a distinguished mineralogist and president of the physical class of the Royal Society, travelled to Iceland in 1810 in the company of Drs. Henry Holland and Richard Bright. The present work is the joint production of the three men, Mackenzie contributing the narrative of the voyage and travels, and the chapters on mineralogy, rural economy and commerce, Dr. Bright the sections on zoology and botany, and Dr. Holland the chapters on literature, diseases, and government, laws and religion. "Although the scientific portions of the book have long been superseded, it contains much information of permanent interest on the social and economic condition of Iceland." (DNB) The mineralogical collections brought back from the expedition were spoken of with great admiration by Sir Charles Lyell. The fine hand-coloured aquatints of scenery and costume by J.Clark and text engravings and plates by R.Scott and E.Mitchell are based on original sketches by the three travellers, the majority drawn by Mackenzie. Sir George found that the "extreme slowness of the Icleanders. and the badness of the roads. occasioned much unlooked-for trouble and delay" during his trip, and forced him to spend much of his time in Reykjavik.
