This scarce photo-engraved print, 'the first sketch ever made of this grand historic event' (the raising of the American flag at Monterey) was drawn under Major Edwin Allen Sherman's direction. It depicts the moment when California effectively became part of the United States and includes a view of the old Customs House, the landing party and the war ships 'Savannah,' 'Levant' and 'Cyane,' which composed Commodore Sloat's squadron. Sherman, Secretary of the Sloat Monument Association, commissioned marine artist W.A. Coulter to create this image, which is SIGNED by the artist in the print. Signed 'Edwin A. Sherman' at center bottom. Some twenty-four years after first proposed by Major Sherman, a monument to the memory of Rear-Admiral Sloat was finally dedicated on the Presidio in Monterey in 1910.…
