In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Vose Galleries of Boston [Published date: 1995]. Paper covers, 32 pp; illustrated throughout with color reproductions ; 28 cm. Catalog of an exhibition held April 26 - June 30, 1995, featuring the works of Ernest Lee Major (1864-1950), with a companion exhibition of works by Alfred Di Cesare (1910-…1993). In very good condition. Yellow illustrated paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light overall scuffing with some fading to spine. Original owner's address label on back cover. Binding tight (staple bound). Pages clean and unmarked. Includes essays, artist biographies, and reproductions of paintings, portraits, still lifes, and figure studies. Issued by Vose Galleries of Boston, established 1841, dealers in fine paintings for five generations. Introduction by Abbot W. Vose and Robert C. Vose III ; Ernest Lee Major, essay by Sheila Dugan ; Alfred Di Cesare: A Reminiscence by Argena Di Cesare. [From Introduction] Thirty years ago Vose Galleries started a series of exhibitions which we believed were long overdue, focusing on the work of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artists, particularly the painters of the Boston school. It is with great pleasure that we reintroduce to our collectors one of the last of that generation of painters, Ernest Lee Major. Major was a wonderful artist. He painted a wide range of subjects and worked in a variety of media. Still life, figure pieces, and landscapes all were of interest to Major. Today he is best remembered for his teaching, and for his role in perpetuating the Boston school style of painting. Major taught for forty-six years at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. There, in one of his evening classes he met Alfred Di Cesare, a talented painter who worked as his studio assistant for ten years. The two men remained close friends until Major's death in 1950. In 1951 Vose Galleries had the honor of presenting a memorial exhibition of the works of Ernest Lee Major. An important group of paintings in that show was bought by Alfred Di Cesare, and remained in his private collection until his death in 1993. Last fall, Argena Di Cesare, widow of the artist, approached Vose Galleries about holding a joint exhibition with works by her late husband, Ernest Lee Major and his student, Alfred Di Cesare. We invite you to view this selection of over fifty paintings by two of Boston's finest artists, knowing you will share our enthusiasm once you see them.

Despite their best efforts, both Smallwood and Barker were subsequently captured by pursuing German troops who they were unable to outpace.Barker provides a vivid account of being 'interrogated' by the SS and Gestapo and despite the threats and the terrible conditions, the true nature of their mission was never revealed to the enemy. Having survived these experiences, he was incarcerated in Stalag Luft XVIII in Southern Austria. Ever defiant, Barker escaped by having himself admitted to the camp hospital and made his way into Hungary, from where, as this account of his wartime service reveals, he was eventually repatriated to the UK.After the war Barker opted to remain in the Army, at which point he took a commission. Promoted to Major, Barker became the Officer Commanding 22 SAS in Malaya. He was killed in a helicopter crash in Malaya in 1953, before he could see through his plan to have his memoir published.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by The Strong Oak Press with Tom Donovan Publishing, Stevenage, Herts, UK. 1988. 241 pgs. DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership ma…rks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. This is the record of the service of Charles Douie during the Great War. It was originally written as a series of articles for The Nineteenth Century and After in 1928; he later added more material for its publication as a book. His memoir is along the lines of Edmund Blunden's Undertones of War, possessing high literary merit, Douie was a well educated soldier. Douie enlisted in 1914 at eighteen years of age with a desire to become a Corporal, however his family obtained him a commission; eventually he became a subaltern in the 1st Dorset Regiment of the British Army. He opens his book with an examination of the soldier of WW1, his reasons for fighting and the existence he experienced at the front. He recounts his enthusiasm for war and wanting to get to the front before it ended; pursuing this goal against the objection of his family. His battalion participated in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 of which he was apart, fighting in the La Boisselle sector and later Thiepval which decimated his battalion. He ended the war in Italy though he has little to say about this campaign, ending his story with impressions of the Armistice on him and his fellow soldiers. Overall this is an exceptional account and has been largely overlooked except by WW1 enthusiasts who consider it a classic. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
