Rptedn; 8vo 2vols brown bds, as new in shrinkwrap; NF/nfdj: 272pp+321pp, illus.; 2vols, / The author was sent out on a Missionary Tour, by one of the great American Societies; but though his special attention was directed to the state and prospects of Missions, he felt the important bearing which the political and economical relations of the countries which he visited, had on the progress of the great cause. His work, accordingly, contains the remarks of an acute and enlightened observer on the state of society and manners, commerce and natural productions, of some of the most interesting portions of the East. ""The only aim of the following pages is utility. Had a place been sought among admired travellers, the author should have given more descriptions, incidents, and delineations of private character; and fewer facts, opinions, and reflections; which would at once have saved labour, and rendered him less vulnerable. Honest intentions, diligent inquiries, and fortunate opportunities, will not secure a traveller from errors, even in Europe or America, where in every place we meet persons of veracity, and free to impart information. In the East the case is much worse. The foreigner, dreaded for his power, and abhorred for his religion, excites both civil and religious jealousy. The map has been constructed with great care. On arriving in India an outline was drawn on a very large scale; and, as local surveys, or narratives of recent journeys, came to hand, corrections were continually made. About the Author:-Howard Malcom was an American educator and Baptist minister. He wrote several noteworthy literatures about his missionary travels in Burma and was pastor of churches in Hudson, New York, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also served as president of Georgetown College, Bucknell University and Drexel University College of Medicine. In 1835, he went on his own missions to India, Burma, Siam, China, and Africa. He wrote some valuable literature about his missionary travels, notably, in 1839, Travels in South-Eastern Asia, embracing Hindustan, Malaya, Siam, and China, and in 1840, Travels in the Burman Empire. In 1843, mainly due to these writings, he received Doctorates of Divinity from Union College and University of Vermont. The Title 'Travels In South-Eastern Asia Embracing Hindustan, Malaya, Siam, And China written/authored/edited by Howard Malcom',/ The author of these pages, Rev. H. Malcolm, a native of Boston, was sent on a missionary tour by one of the American Societies, with special directions to report on the progress and prospect of missions. Along with it he took it upon himself to analyse the bearing that the political and economic conditions had on his cause. His work, the journal of his travels from Sept. 1835 upto March 1838, contains much information on the history, arts, produce, economics, customs, manners and rituals of the counties that he visited. The 2 volume book is divided into 4 parts. The first details his travels in Burma, Chittagong and Arracan; the second detailed but notes on the Burman empire; the third parts is bout his travels in India, Malasia, Siam and China. The last part deals with his observations on the state and future of missionary activities and missions.".
