In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This volume consists ofsurvey articles on current topics in computational wave prop agation and inverse problems, written by leading experts in their respective fields. The idea to compile such a volume arose in conjunction with the LMS Durham Symposium on Computational Methods for Wave Propagation in Direct Scattering held at the University of Durham from 15th-25th July 2002, which we jointly or ganised. The meeting, attended by 70 participants from the UK and overseas, was structured around a number of short, three lecture, survey courses on a range of top ics on computational wave propagation and inverse problems beginning at the level of a graduate student. We were delighted to secure the participation of distinguished international researchers to present these lectures. We felt that it would be valuable to record this material for the benefit of a wider audience, and the idea was hatched that the individual lecturers should be invited to contribute a survey article. Fortunately, many of the speakers not only agreed to undertake this arduous task, but produced what we hope you will agree are the high quality contributions found in this volume. Finally, it is a pleasure to thank the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of Great Britain and the London Mathematical Society for providing the generous support that allowed the meeting to take place. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Eighth EPSRC Numerical Analysis Summer School was held at the Uni versity of Leicester from the 5th to the 17th of July, 1998. This was the third Numerical Analysis Summer School to be held in Leicester. The previous meetings, in 1992 and 1994, had been carefully structured to ensure that each week had a coherent 'theme'. For the 1998 meeting, in order to widen the audience, we decided to relax this constraint. Speakers were chosen to cover what may appear, at first sight, to be quite diverse areas of numeri cal analysis. However, we were pleased with the extent to which the ideas cohered, and particularly enjoyed the discussions which arose from differing interpretations of those ideas. We would like to thank all six of our main speakers for the care which they took in the preparation and delivery of their lectures. In this volume we present their lecture notes in alphabetical rather than chronological order. Nick Higham, Alastair Spence and Nick Trefethen were the speakers in week 1, while Bernardo Cockburn, Stig Larsson and Bob Skeel were the speakers in week 2. Another new feature of this meeting compared to its predecessors was that we had 'invited seminars'. A numer of established academics based in the UK were asked to participate in the afternoon seminar program.

In den WarenkorbLeather Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Later Printing. MARK TWAIN'S COPY, signed and dated by him on recto of frontispiece 'S.L. Clemens London 1874' in pencil. Also bears the mounted printed bookplate reading 'This volume is from the library of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain).' signed by Albert Bigelow Paine, noting that it was 'Sold February, 1911, by the Anderson Auction Company' of New York. Bound in 3/4 red polished calf over marbled boards by Zaehnsdord for A.C. McClurg, spine with raised bands, twin burgundy morocco labels, and elaborate gilt tooling with 'Mark Twain's Copy' in gilt at foot, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers (some rubbing to extremities). Ainsworth's Jack Sheppard, the most notorious novel of its time and the first of what were to be referred to as Newgate novels, was first published in 1839-1840. Although it is recorded that Twain Twain did not own a copy of the work until he purchased this copy in 1874, he repeatedly mentioned the tale of Jack Sheppard in writings and speeches as early as 1855. These references include: I) Twain's story 'Jul'us Caesar' written around 1855-56. ('Jul'us Caesar' was first published in 1979 in Early Tales & Sketches, Vol. 1.]; II) a contribution to the 'Territorial Enterprise', January 1866 (reprinted in Mark Twain's San Francisco, edited by Bernard Taper, (McGraw Hill, 1963); III) in a speech to the Middlesex Club, Boston, November 6, 1880, celebrating Republican election wins and the defeat of Democratic Senator William Henry Barnum of Connecticut, whom Twain claimed was 'conspicuous to the end of his life as the man who has simply made Jack Sheppard respectable.' PROVENANCE: I) Mark Twain's copy, signed by him; II) leather bookplate of John Stuart Groves; III) ink inscription of noted American poet William Matchett.
