No Binding. Zustand: Near Fine. Frederick Marns (illustrator). Since it was first published in 1789, the collection of letters of the country parson, Gilbert White, describing the flora and fauna of his Hampshire village, had gone through around 150 different editions before the Gilbert White Museum commissioned the new edition of "The Natural History of Selborne" which was published in 1977. The book carried a foreword by Lord Selborne, a heartfelt introduction by David Attenborough, reproductions of Thomas Bewick bird engravings, and ten remarkable pencil drawings by Frederick Marns. I was lucky enough to have watched this artist/designer/hand-letterer (I think he preferred that term over "calligrapher") work on a number of occasions. Whether he was filling in a name on a certificate, addressing an envelope, signing a book or a print, writing an owner's name in gold ink on the lid of a hugely valuable Steinway grand piano, his work was exact and meticulous to a degree that inspired awe and disbelief. The ten drawings in "The Natural History of Selborne" took him a year to complete, going out each day to the chosen location with 200 sharpened pencils in his bag so that he didn't have to waste time sharpening them while he worked. The publisher of the book, Shepheard-Walwyn, issued prints of five of the drawings. This one is entitled "Dorton Cottage, Selborne, Hampshire". The image measures 10.5" x 12.5", the paper is 13.25" x 15.5". Incorporated into the print is the artist's name and the date: "A F MARNS 76". I will pack the print carefully and safely in a tube and notify you about any additional shipping costs.
