Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. Marsh, Susan (jacket design) (illustrator). 1st Edition. As new condition olive green cloth boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Works of Art and Text Credits. Profusely illustrated with full color paintings, drawings, sculpture, and color illustrated front and rear endpapers. "The human affinity with our animal cousins has been a continual source of inspiration and complex inquiry. Artists have been no strangers to this fascination, and the world of art is rich with depictions of animals, from cave paintings to contemporary canvases. The attempt to understand animals and our relationships with them has often led artists to create masterworks devoted to these creatures: Durer created naturalistic studies of beasts - magnificently real or imaginary - that set a standard seldom equaled; Delacroix painted exquisite watercolor "portraits" of tigers and lions; and Rousseau brought to bear a near Freudian symbolic weight in his landscapes peopled by lions, crocodiles, and monkeys. Noble Beasts is a delightful gathering of such works plumbed from the collections of the National Gallery of Art. Beginning with images from the wilds of the artist's mind - whether situated in the arctic or the tropics - the book progresses through various animal realms: sea and sky, forest and field, and urban environs, coming to rest at the hearthside or on the lap with images and musings on pets. Each work of art is accompanied by a literary excerpt that provides comment on our way of looking at both the art and the animal depicted. Included are paintings by Rubens, Boucher, Manet, Renoir, Gauguin, Bonnard, Vuillard, and Hopper; drawings by Mantegna and Titian; prints by Durer and Schongauer; and sculpture from Renaissance Italy and seventeenth-century Nigeria. Of special interest are works of American folk art that go to the heart of our devotion to these beautiful creatures. Equally varied, the texts range from Homer (in Pope's elegant translation), Milton, Wyatt, Walpole, and Blake to modern and contemporary writers like Hopkins, Yeats, Lawrence, Stevens, Moore, Kunitz, and Berry. Noble Beasts is a celebration of animals - their strength, beauty, ferocity, and amiability - as well as an informal inquiry into our timeless care for and fear of their natures as companion and predator. Compiled for people of all ages, the book will take on new meanings as its readers pass from age to age." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
