An den Architekten Gottfried Semper (18031879): Vor Allem muß ich die Verzögerung dieses Briefes dadurch entschuldigen, daß ich ganz ungewöhnlicher Weise die beiden Beilagen verkramt hatte, ohne welche mein Schreiben Ihnen nichts genü[t]zt hätte. Aus demselben ersehen Sie nun, wie ich Ihren Auftrag besorgt habe, und wünsche nur daß die Abgüsse unbeschädigt Ihnen zukommen mögen. Für die angenehme Bekanntschaft mit Herrn Stammann danke ich Ihnen, leider war seine Zeit so sehr in Anspruch genommen, daß ich ihm nur einen Theil des Gewerbe Instituts zeigen konnte. Das Projekt zu den Anlagen auf der Akropolis ist fertig, ich habe es aber noch nicht gesehen, weil es zuerst bei Hof aufwartet [.]". Johann Matthäus Mauch war unter Karl Friedrich Schinkel als Conducteur beim Bau des neuen Berliner Schauspielhauses beschäftigt gewesen und war von diesem anschließend dem Vorstand des neugegründeten königlichen Gewerbe-Institutes, P. C. W. Beuth, empfohlen worden. Als gewandter Zeichner wurde er zu verschiedenen durch das preußische Ministerium veranlaßten Publicationen beigezogen, so namentlich zu dem von der technischen Deputation der Gewerbe herausgegebenen Prachtwerke: Vorbilder für Fabrikanten und Handwerker' (18211830), für welches er viele Zeichnungen lieferte und einen Theil davon selbst stach und lithographirte [.] Von einer längeren Studienreise nach Italien im Jahre 1830, wo er viel mit Eckermann und dem jungen Goethe [d. i. August von Goethe, der während jener Reise verstarb] zusammen war, brachte er allerlei Früchte fleißiger Studien mit, die er in der Folge als Schriftsteller und Lehrer zu verwerthen wußte" (ADB XX, 685). 1839 folgte er einem Ruf an die königliche Gewerbeschule in Stuttgart, wo er als Professor für monumentale Baukunst und deren Geschichte sowie für Ornamentzeichnen und Modellieren tätig war. Mit stärkeren Faltspuren und etwas knittrig; papierbedingt etwas gebräunt; das Respektblatt mit Siegelrest und kleinen von anderer Hand stammenden Vermerken.
