In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+. First Edition Later Printing. Offers personal insights into the women behind the man, the wife of China's leader, Chiang Kai-Shek, during the "First United Nations Year" of 1942 (though the UN would not officially exist until 1945, with China one of its founding members). Contains 16 speeches delivered at various venues--schools, to the American Flying Tigers, women's & volunteer groups--as World War II raged around her, with a Foreword (unattributed) which suggests that this book was intended as a companion to the Generalissimo's "All We Are and All We Have." Orig. published in paper wrappers by the Chinese News Service in Mar. 1943, this is the First Edition (third impression) in hardcover from John Day, Apr. 1943. Small 8vo (5.50" x 8.25") has soft yellow cloth-covered boards lettered in red to front & spine. Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with moderate, even tanning, unmarked except that endpapers show some offsetting from cellophane tape that was used to secure the DJ. Corners crisp, with a hint of pushing to lower spine. The unclipped DJ (with $1.25 price intact to front flap) is VG+: very clean with a heavily darkened spine, a few random spots, mild chipping to both ends of spine, tiny unclosed tear descending from top edge of front cover; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free (removed for photos). Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.

In den WarenkorbOctavo, string bound silk wrapped boards (hardcover), x + 119 pp. Good+, with wear to spine and sunning to edges, slight foxing (age darkened spotting). From Foreword: For the sheer thrill of danger, romance, calm courage and dramatic climax, these two documents have all the fascinating interest of a historical novel. But this is immensely intensified when it is realized that they are the authoritative records of actual happenings only a few months ago while the fate of a great nation was literally trembling in the balance and the whole world was awaiting the outcome with puzzled bewilderment and ancious forebodings. Madame Chiang describes her part in this sensational occurrence while the incidents are still fresh in her memory and in doing so unconsciously reveals a wifely devotion, a woman's intuitive understanding of the basic issues and a superb heroism which are the more convincing because written with so objective a purpose to give the simple facts. Asian History, Asia, Sian, China, Chinese.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Shanghai: The China Publishing Company, 1937. 1st edition. x + 119pp. 8vo. Scarlet cloth, gilt lettering on front cover. Bound in traditional Chinese style. Printed on hand-made bamboo paper. Chiang Kai-Shek's calligraphy on the front cover. Very good. The Chinese leader and his wife's account of their kidnapping in Xian in 1936. "The Incident is doubtless one of the most sensational episodes in modern history and many people still view the event with excitement, regret, and indignation. While the dramatic capture of Chiang Kai-shek and his abrupt release have already mystified many, the negotiated settlement and the aftermath of the Incident remain largely in speculation. Apart from the coup itself, the Sian Incident was the pivotal point in modern Chinese history, so crucial in fact to the survival of the Chinese Communist movement that even today Nationalist writ- ers and officials in Taiwan denounce the Young Marshal Chang Hslieh- liang for having done unforgivable and irreparable damage to the na- tion. They argue, as did Chiang Kai-shek himself, that the Red Army, then numbering approximately 30,000 men and cornered in the inhospitable North Shensi, would have been doomed to destruction, had the Sian Incident not occurred to ruin the whole plan for its ex- termination." (Quoting: The Sian Incident: A Pivotal Point in Modern Chinese History by Tien-wei Wu).

Stated "First Edition de luxe, May 1937"; printed in China by Kelley & Walsh, Ltd.; red silk covers; exquisitely decorative cloth covered spine partly bound with a hard-to-describe decorative black thread; gilt front cover title (of only the first of the two books: "Sian: A Coup d' État") with gilt Chinese characters below it ("The Chinese characters on the silk cover are a translation of the titles in the Generalissimo's own calligraphy"--from the half-title page); gentle corner bumps, and a small faded ("sunned") area above the front cover gilt title; some foxing to the end papers and a heavy spiral pencil mark to the inner rear cover; "This book has been printed on specially prepared Chinese paper made by hand from bamboo fibre"--again from the half-title page; delicate uncut double pages, in the Asian manner; foreword by J. Leighton Stuart, presumably the author too of footnotes to some text pages; the text pages themselves tight, clean, square, and unmarked throughout, only a few spots (of "foxing"); 119 pp. with an index of "Names Mentioned in the Story and Diary"; remarkable piece of book-making and odd relic of Chinese-American history.
