Illustrated with numerous engravings from designs by W. M'Connell, Kenny Meadows, H. G. Hine, and T. Macquoid. First few pages have some pencil underlining and marginalia, the results of a non-native speaker's efforts to identify difficult words, with a few translations in what may be Swedish. Edges rubbed and worn, otherwise a nice enough copy of a scarce book in any binding. Wolff 845 records his copy of the title novella's first periodical appearance in The Welcome Guest; he did not own a copy of the book. #316. $75. The title work is a short novel mixing crime, wit and romance. Most of the remainder of the book presents narrative verse of a generally light or satiric nature. "A radical in politics and a bohemian in life style" (Sutherland, p. 88), Brough produced journalism and fiction before dying at the age of 32, leaving his wife and children broke.
