In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition dark gray boards, red spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition photographic dust jacket. Includes Preface; Provenance of the Contents; Notes and Index. "Mark Twain once observed of the Civil War that it had "uprooted institutions that were centuries old, changed the politics of a people, transformed the social life of half the country, and wrought so profoundly upon the entire national character that the influence cannot be measured short of two or three generations." Six generations have now passed since it took place, and Americans are still struggling to measure its influence. In The War That Forged a Nation, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James McPherson considers why the Civil War remains so deeply and firmly embedded within our national consciousness. The drama and tragedy of the war, from its scope and size - an estimated death toll of 750,000, not including civilians - to the nearly mythical individuals involved - Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Frederick Douglass, Clara Barton, Stonewall Jackson among them - help to explain why the war commands and indeed compels our attention. But the legacy of the war extends far beyond historical interest or scholarly scrutiny. To show why the Civil War still matters, McPherson draws upon his work and thought over the past fifty-six years, beginning when he was a graduate student and discovering the connection between the Civil War and civil rights. From that revelation grew the certainty that to understand the issues of our own day - racial inequality, political gridlock, regional conflict, Red States and Blue States, question of state sovereignty, and the sometimes violent disagreement about the role of government in social change - we need look no further than the Civil War. Thoughtful, provocative, and authoritative, The War That Forged a Nation looks anew at the reasons America's civil war has provoked intense interest for the past century and a half, and affirms the enduring relevance of the struggle that nearly destroyed this country and most certainly continues to define it." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Goddard, Angela (cover design) (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition black cloth boards with orange spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by James McPherson; Author Dedication; List of Maps; Editor's Note; Preface; Introduction; Notes; Bibliographical Essay; Acknowledgments; and Index. Illustrated with maps, black-and-white drawings, and black-and-white photographs. Crossroads of Freedom is what we have come to expect of James McPherson - a compelling account that displays his command of that Civil War era's military and political history. It vividly illuminates a critical turning point in the transformation of the war for the Union into a crusade for emancipation." - Eric Foner, author. "The battle of Antietam wielded enormous influence over the course of the Civil War. Although not a decisive tactical victory, it boosted the Union cause in profoundly important ways. James M. McPherson's engaging and perceptive narrative places Antietam within the broader context of the war, assessing major commanders, evaluating strategic decisions and movements, and explaining the battle's background as well as its seismic political and diplomatic consequences. Anyone interested in learning about Antietam should begin by reading this book." - Gary W. Gallagher, author. "Historian James McPherson is an national treasure, and [the book] is his latest gem. Vivid, elegantly written, and superbly rendered, this slender volume brings the momentous events surrounding the fateful battle of Antietam to life as never before. I loved this splendid book!" - Jay Winik, author. ""The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day in American history, with more than 6,000 soldiers killed - four times the number lost on D-Day, and twice the fatalities of the September 11th terrorist attacks. In [the book], America's most eminent Civil War historian, James M. McPherson, paints a masterful account of this pivotal battle, the events that led up to is, and its aftermath.McPherson brilliantly weaves.strands of diplomatic, political, and military history into a compact, swift-moving narrative that shows why America's bloodiest day was, indeed, a turning point in our history." - excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. First Edition of McPherson's first book, a highly regarded collection of stories. The book sprung from a burgeoning relationship with the Atlantic Monthly, who published the story "Gold Coast" prior to this collection. He was quickly made editor, and Hue and Cry came out under Atlantic's imprint on LBC. Through this he developed a relationship with Ralph Ellison, who found the writer a breath of fresh air against his estimation of the current climate of black writing. As he states in his back jacket praise for the book, "McPherson's stories are in themselves a hue and cry against the dead, publicity-sustained writing which has come increasingly to stand for what is called 'black writing.'" Very Good, bottom corners and perimeters of spine pushed, boards lightly scuffed, stain towards crown of spine, some soiling to text block, else sound and clean. Good unclipped jacket showing some edgewear, soiling, rubbing. Open diagonal tear to crown of spine, culminating 1.5" down and removing the "E" from HUE in the lettering, all other material present. Hardcover octavo, quarter red cloth with gilt stamped lettering to spine over mustard boards, 275 pp. Jacket Design by S. Neil Fujita (illustrator).…
