In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Author: Herman Melville. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Title: Moby Dick, or The Whale. Publisher: New York, Random House, 1930. First one-volume illustrated edition by Rockwell Kent. Language: Text in English. Size: 7.5 " X 5.5 ". Pages: xxxi-822 pages. Binding: Attractive and very good binding in the original publisher's black cloth with striking silver pictorial stamping to front cover and spine. The front board features Kent's iconic image of the breaching whale, with dramatic typography and nautical elements extending to the spine (hinges fine, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, light usual toning to pages - as shown, endpapers mildly toned - as shown, scarce original publisher's promotional leaf with Rockwell Kent's portrait freely inserted at front - as shown, free endpaper page bears a whimsical purple moon-face stamp at the bottom right - as shown). Illustrations: Profusely illustrated throughout with full-page and in-text woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent. All illustrations are complete and showcase Kent's stark, modernist style, which lends a mythic intensity to the narrative. **** The book: This is the landmark 1930 First trade one volume edition of Moby Dick by Herman Melville, illustrated by Rockwell Kent, and published by Random House following the deluxe 1929 Lakeside Press edition. Revered for bringing Melville's then-neglected masterpiece back to prominence, this edition combines literary and artistic brilliance. Kent's dramatic black-and-white woodcuts redefined the visual language of Melville's epic tale of obsession and the sea. This edition marked a major moment in American publishing, making Kent's illustrations widely available for the first time.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Limited Edition. Three large volumes in original aluminum slipcase. Limited to 1000 copies. 280 striking illustrations by Rockwell Kent. Original silver stamped black cloth, beveled edges. Internally the books are in near fine condition, bindings are tight and square, pages are clean and bright. Only occasional very light offsetting shadows from the prints onto the facing pages. Externally the books are in very good condition; volume one has light rubbing to the spine ends and along the top and bottom edges of the back board. Slipcase is in very good plus condition. There is an interesting association with this copy. The bookplates of Joseph Halle Schaffner are on the front end-papers of each volume. Schaffner (1897-1972) spent most of his life in his native Chicago as director of the clothing-manufacturing firm Hart, Schaffner, and Marx. Much of his collection in the field of science, including manuscripts and correspondence by Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Marie Curie were donated to the University of Chicago. It seems likely that Schaffner purchased this copy new, when it was published in 1930, since at that time he was 33 years old, wealthy and living in Chicago. In sum, this is a very nice set of what is arguably the greatest American illustrated book of the 20th century.

In den WarenkorbHard Cover. Zustand: Good binding. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Poor dust jacket. Octavo. xxxi, [1], 822, [6] pp., illus. Self-styled, "De Luxe Edition." Here signed by Kent on the front free endpper. As issued, in publisher's cloth with Kent illustration in gilt on the front cover. Spine partially sunned; unfortunate predation to the cloth of the back joint, otherwise, binding is quite fresh with only light fraying at the tail of the spine; bookplate on the front pastedown; contents clean and binding solid; dust jacket with large loss of the spine and a portion of the rear panel; front flap is separated but present, all held together in a mylar cover. Poor to Fair jacket. Tanselle, in his A Checklist of Editions of Moby-Dick, 1851-1976, writes of the first, quarto edition of Kent's work: "The most elaborate physical presentation which had been accorded to Moby-Dick up to this time, and one of the finest examples of bookmaking to found among all the editions of his work. Kent's illustrations are now perhaps the best-known illustrations for Moby-Dick and are certainly among the most effective" (from Tanselle, No. 17). And indeed, Kent's illustration is singular and captured in this present Garden City edition (Tanselle, No. 18c) which was printed by the Lakeside Press, after an American and a British trade edition in a reduced-size, one-volume format (as here) was printed for Random House and Cassell respectively. Rare with Kent's signature.
