Famed Chicago civil liberties and 1st Amendment lawyer Elmer Gertz (1906-2000) was counsel to plaintiffs Henry Miller and Grove Press when the Sheriff of Cook County unilaterally and without warrants, confiscated all copies of Tropic of Cancer from county book stores, including those in Chicago. Gertz/Miller/Grove prevailed at trial, winning TofC's first legal victory in the U.S. Mild sunning to wrappers otherwise a Fine copy.
