Hardcover. Zustand: Good. This is a tale of two something or others, the covers are quite worn and the spine is missing but the pages with the twenty-six etchings are all in excellent condition. There is none of the foxing I have seen in other listings where photographs are included. There is very close to no soiling at all, in total a spot or two and a few specks-- and I turned over every page. The frontispiece which is not counted among the 26 etchings does have a very light tan spot at its center. Across the way is an etching of Goethe which is in excellent condition. The following page is the title page, then the one-page Introduction with the first plate across from it. After that you have a selection from Goethe's Faust and a Plate across from it. The verso sides of both the Text page and the Plate page are blank. So it's text, plate, blank page, blank page, text, plate, blank page, blank page. All the way through. Curiously, in a good number of instances you can see lightly some of the tracings of the figures in the etchings on the text pages across from them. I'm confident that would be the case with all of the copies of this edition. The tracings, where they occur, are quite light and have absolutely no impact on one's ability to read the print (I have provided a photograph). The text pages and pages with the Plates are also in very good condition. I'm not seeing any creasing. I didn't see any tears. There are no markings on any of them or anywhere in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. With all that said, the binding of the pages is not wonderful. The inside covers and end papers are blue. The blue front end paper and the two white end papers that follow it are bound together in one gathering. The next bound gathering takes us through to the second plate. The next to the sixth plate. The next bound gathering takes us through to the tenth plate. The next to the fourteenth. The next to the eighteenth (I'm seeing a pattern). The next to the twenty-second. The next to the text page of the twenty-sixth. And in the last gathering of pages there is the twenty-sixth plate, one blank end paper and one blue end paper. Each of these gatherings is detached from the other gatherings. The blue front end paper has some late staining off its inside edge and small losses off its bottom edge. One other thing: the page edges are all gilt. They look very bright. 'Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter, draughtsman, and etcher. He was born in the Saxon capital Dresden. He joined the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1798 under Cajetan Toscani and Józef Grassi, later working autodidactically, copying the famous pictures of the Gemäldegalerie, among them a copy of the Sixtinian Madonna. He was made a member of the Academy in 1817 and professor in 1824. The Cotta publishing house commissioned illustrations for Johann Wolfgang Goethe's Faust (26 plates), which made him financially independent. Goethe liked his work, and he illustrated works by other famous authors, most notably Friedrich Schiller's Lied von der Glocke (43 plates), a Shakespeare Gallery (80 plates), and Bürger's Ballads (15 plates). He also did oil paintings on classical subjects, and portraits. Many of his works were created in a house in the Lößnitz, with a view of the Elbe Valley.'. Hardcover. 8vo. (6) 10pp. 40pp. xiv. 1/4 blue cloth over black paper covered boards. Printed on high quality cotton rag/ Famous work by renowned Medieval Jewish Rabbi, Physician and Philosopher, Moses Maimonides a.k.a. Ramba"m (1135-1204). Translated from Judeo-Arabic into Hebrew by Rabbi Isaac ben Nathan. This is the first edition with a German commentary: Renowned Orientalist and bibliographer Moritz Steinschneider (see below) added a summary, a linguistic analysis and a thematic analysis in his preface. Age wear to binding, with minor browning and foxing throughout. Overall clean and tight. In Hebrew, with German preface. Good condition. R. Moses Maimonides (Rambam) was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure, both during his lifetime and after his death, but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba, Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi, physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah, his only work not in Arabic, still carries canonical authority, particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community, as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj, Kitab al-Fara'I, a book on precepts, and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin, known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim, The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. On the editor: Moritz Steinschneider (1816 1907) was a Bohemian Orientalist and bibliographer. He received his early instruction in Hebrew from Jacob Steinschneider (1782 - 1856), his father, who was not well versed in both Talmud and secular science. In order to show the part that Jews had taken in the general history of civilization (Kulturgeschichte), Steinschneider chose fields unrelated to Jewish religion and theology, like mathematics, medicine, natural history and philology. He was the first scholar to give a systematic survey of Jewish literature till the end of the eighteenth century, and to publish catalogues of the Hebrew manuscripts and books which are found in the public libraries of Europe. The Bodleian catalogue was the foundation of his reputation as the greatest Jewish bibliographer. A massive bibliography cataloging over three centuries of Hebrew manuscripts and books collected in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Moravian bibliographer, Moritz Steinschneider (1816-1907) is noted as the greatest recorder of Jewish literature with this work establishing his fame. Moritz Steinschneider received his early instruction in Hebrew from his father, Jacob Steinschneider (b. 1782; d. March 1856), who was both an expert Talmudist and well versed in secular science. The house of the elder Steinschneider was the rendezvous of a few progressive Hebraists, among whom was his brother-in-law, the physician and writer Gideon Brecher. At the age of 6 Steinschneider was sent to the public school, which was still an uncommon choice for Jews in the Austro-Hungarian empire at the time; and at the age of 13 he became the pupil of Rabbi Nahum Trebitsch, whom he followed to Mikulov, Moravia in 1832. In 1833, in order to continue his Talmudic studies, he went to Prague, where he remained until 1836. In 1836 Steinschneider went to Vienna to continue his studies, and, on the advice of his friend Leopold Dukes, he devoted himself especially to Oriental and Neo-Hebrew literatures, and most particularly to bibliography, which would become his principal focus. His countryman Abraham Benisch and Moravian Albert Löwy also were studying there at the time. In Lowy's room in 1838 they inaugurated among intimate (and lifelong) friends a proto-Zionist society called "Die Einheit". The society's objective was to promote the welfare of the Jewish people, and in order to realize this objective, they advocated the settlement of Palestine by Austrian Jews. Their objective had to be kept secret for fear it would be put down by the government; England became regarded as the country likely to welcome the new movement. In 1841 Lowy was sent to London as an emissary of the Students' Jewish National Society; Benisch also arrived in England the same year. Somewhat abandoned, Steinschneider would later withdraw from the society completely in 1842, viewing the scheme as impractical compared to his studies. As a Jew on the continent, Steinschneider was prevented from entering the Oriental Academy; and for the same reason he was unable even to obtain permission to make extracts from the Hebrew books and manuscripts in the Imperial Library, Vienna. In spite of these drawbacks, he continued his studies in Arabic, Syriac, and Hebrew with Professor Kaerle at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University. He had at this juncture the intention of adopting the rabbinical career. In Vienna, as formerly in Prague, he earned a livelihood by giving lessons, teaching Italian among other subjects. For political reasons he was compelled to leave Vienna and decided to go to Berlin; but, being unable to obtain the necessary passport, he remained in Leipzig. At the university there he continued the study of Arabic under Professor Fleischer. At this time, he began the translation of the Qur'an into Hebrew and collaborated with Franz Delitzsch in editing Aaron ben Elijah's 'Etz Chayyim (Leipzig, 1841); but the rules of the Austrian censorship did not permit the publication of his name as coeditor. While in Leipzig he contributed a number of articles on Jewish and Arabic literature to Pierer's Universal Encyklopädie . . . . …
