"Il colonialismo italiano terminò ufficialmente con la sconfitta dell'Italia nella seconda guerra mondiale, ma nel 1950 la nuova Italia democratica ritornò nella più periferica delle ex colonie a guidare l'Amministrazione fiduciaria italiana della Somalia per conto delle Nazioni Unite. La rinnovata presenza in Africa fu l'unica decolonizzazione italiana che venne intesa da parte dell'ex madrepatria come una sorta di prova di recupero: l'esperimento di un colonialismo democratico orientato alla collaborazione piuttosto che al dominio nascondeva però una serie di intrinseche contraddizioni. Nel serrato confronto fra l'amministrazione italiana e la Lega dei giovani somali, gli italiani dovettero dimostrare nei fatti di essere ritornati con l'intento di lavorare per l'indipendenza del paese e i 'giovani somali' furono chiamati a vincere al loro interno le tendenze più estremiste collegate all'Egitto di Nasser. L'indagine di Morone dimostra come l'indipendenza della Somalia nel 1960 se da un lato ha sancito l'inclusione dei somali nella gestione del potere attraverso le elezioni politiche, dall'altro non ha superato il clan quale vecchio elemento dell'amministrazione coloniale e nuovo strumento di mobilitazione politica. Ma, soprattutto, la capacità dell'Italia di elaborare soluzioni politiche e istituzionali durevoli per il futuro Stato somalo fu nel complesso insufficiente, non avendo gli strumenti sofisticati e adeguati per esercitare quell'influenza pervasiva in forma indiretta.".
