A press photograph of James Forman delivering the "Black Manifesto" before the American Baptist Convention in Seattle in May 1969. Forman, a former executive secretary of SNCC and later a figure in the Black Panther Party and League of Revolutionary Black Workers, had helped present the manifesto at the National Black Economic Development Conference in Detroit the previous month. The document demanded $500 million in reparations from white churches and synagogues for their role in slavery, segregation, and the continuing economic subordination of Black Americans. Forman first brought the manifesto to national attention by presenting it at Riverside Church in New York on May 4, 1969, and then carried the campaign to other religious bodies. In this photograph he stands at a podium in front of an image of black and white figures approaching a crucifix, making the composition unusually apt for the campaign's demand that religious institutions accept material responsibility for racial injustice. The manifesto was rejected by most churches and synagogues, but the campaign raised significant funds and became an important episode in the history of modern reparations activism. . Each item is on a sheet of laid paper, 39 x 29 cm, and each with the Roycroft watermark. Both items are grubby, with wear and creasing to extremities, but with the design and much of the margin entirely undamaged. Both have an identical block of printed text (roughly 13.5 x 9 cm) at the centre: 'THE truth is that in human service there is no low or high degree: the woman who scrubs is as WORTHY of RESPECT as the man who Preaches | ELBERT HUBBARD'. In both cases this is placed in the green centre of a block of hand-painted illumination roughly 20.5 x 15 cm: one of the two with a brown, yellow and red decorative border, and the other with a blue, green and red border.
