First published in England in 1924 this US edition represents an "abridged, slightly corrected republication." The full page colour frontis from the 1924 issue is here repeated inside the front cover, as are all the 124 plates from the original, in a section at the back. The 62 page historical introduction includes numerous sketches by the author, then follows 16 pages with notes on the models illustrated. The 124 models are presented in b/w photos, the vast majority one image to a page and cover ships from 1503 to 1890. This an ex-library copy. Approx 200 pages ( photo section not paginated.) Colour pictorial card covers clear plastic laminated, crossed barcode lower front, small coding label spine base, library stamp top margin inside from cover, withdrawn stamp upper title page, coding label lower right corner, library stamp top margin first text page and lower edge inside back cover, no other library markings. This book is little used, spine area is double plastic sheet reinforced, text block excellent.

The front panel has a few light stains to the centre and a little rubbing to the gilt lettering. Light rubbing to the edges and corners and the rear panel has some light staining and marking. Page edges a little browned. Gift message to the original owner on the front free endpaper - this was Marjorie Powell, a botanist and yachtswoman who lived in Great Shelford, Cambridge. Light spotting to the endpapers and a little creasing to a few top corners but the pages are otherwise largely unmarked. Includes a large number of illustrations with four colour plates. Several of the illustrations are based on drawings by R. Morton Nance and Cecil King. No jacket.

Boards have moderate shelf wear, with rubbing and marking. Heavy bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends, causing cloth to fray. Book has noticeable forward lean, with tanning overall.
