The role of the laity in the Catholic Church is a live issue today. The discussion has various facets in various countries, like the position of women in the Church or their ordination to the ministerial priesthood. The laity's role in the administration of the temporalities of the Church is a hot issue in certain countries. According to the Second Vatican Council the ecclesial mission of the laity is specific and is to be exercised in the secular sphere. if so, is it not the laity that must be competent and responsible to administer the Church's temporal goods like church property and finances? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The study has been occationed by the recent developments in the Syro-Malabar Church regarding the role of laypeople in Church administration on the basis of the ancient Thomaschristian system of yógam. While recognising its merits the author also discusses its limits in acritical appraisal. Though the work is focussed on the rights exercised by laypeople in the Thomaschristian system of yógam, the questions raised are of general interest. But Indian geography or history does not know any city by this name. In the new Barrington Atlas (2000), however, Calamina is shown as a city on the Bay of Bengal, while in the latest edition of the Martyrologium Romanum (2001) there is no more mention of Calamina. Calamina has long been a riddle. After a historical and philological enquiry the article examines critically the various solutions proposed. It resolves the riddle by showing that Calamina is the foreign form of the Tamil name for the Chola kingdom not city Cholamandalam, which survives as Choromandel.…

Punto metallico --- The question of Christian origins in India is usually discussed taking as the point of departure the third century apocryphal Acts of Thomas, and the conclusion is historical uncertainty. But a different starting point, which is historically earlier and more certain, is to be found in the early Alexandrian tradition represented by Pantaenus, Origen and Athanasius. Pantaenus visited India ca 180-190, and, according to the accounts by Eusebius and Jerome, met with Christians there who reported Christian origins from the apostolic times. However, the terminological ambiguity about India, sometimes confused with other countries like Ethiopia or Arabia in antiquity, has prevented many in the past from regarding the report of Pantaenus as unequivocal. This question has been researched by scholars like Albrecht Dihle, who concludes that Eusebius and Jerome can certainly be trusted to know the real India. Another difficulty is often seen in a text of Origen, who is usually understood to exclude India from the countries in which the gospel had been preached by his time. The present study shows that what Origen affirmed was that the gospel had not yet been preached in Aryan India, which is to imply that it had been preached in nonAryan India or South India. In the following century Athanasius declared that the Christians in India professed the Nicean Christological faith. Thus there is continuity between Pantaenus, Origen and Athanasius in the Alexandrian tradition about early Christianity in India, which complements and supports the Thomaschristian tradition about Christian origins in India in apostolic times.…

Punto metallico --- Although India belonged to the geography of Greek and Roman antiquity, there was also some confusion in identifying this country. It was sometimes confused, for example, with Ethiopia or Arabia. This confusion, which has been recently documented, was caused in part by Greek etymology: aithiops (= black-faced, dark) was applicable not only to the people of Ethiopia but to all other "coloured" people whether Indians or Arabians. However, this Greek etymology did not cause any real confusion in the minds of geographers, in the voyages of sailors, in the conquests of empire builders or in the travels of pilgrims or adventurers. The leading Fathers of the Church and ecclesiastical writers were well versed in ancient geography and distinguished clearly between India and Ethiopia. As regards the evangelization of these two countries, while in India there is a tradition about St. Thomas the Apostle, Ethiopia boasts of no such tradition being known for its evangelization by Frumentius in the fourth century.…

Punto metallico --- The Anaphora of Addai and Mari has long been regarded as anomalous and problematic because it does not contain the institution narrative with the words of consecration "This is my body, This is my blood." This problem was brought to a head with the official Roman approval in 2001 of this anaphora for valid eucharistic celebration. But since the eucharist was celebrated at first without the institution narrative in the early Church, also in Rome, the present article argues that the real problem is its subsequent addition. This was indeed a legitimate liturgical development, but not a theological necessity. In the parallel case of baptism, the Church obeyed the command of Jesus to baptize without reciting any institution narrative of baptism. The Church can do likewise and fulfil Jesus' command without reciting any institution narrative of the eucharist. Its use will be necessary insofar as it is prescribed by the Church, which has the power to specify the "form" of the sacraments. What is essential is for the Church to do what Jesus commanded, not also recite as a mantra the command or the reason given for the command.…

Punto Metallico --- An ancient Sanskrit inscription in what is now a Hindu temple in central India has been interpreted both in a Hindu sense and horizon by a Brahmin scholar KamalaKanta and in a Christian sense and horizon by a French Jesuit missionary Benoît Burthey of the Madura Mission ( 1895). According to the latter, the long inscription is the record of a Christian church built in 1060 and dedicated to Mary, "the Mother of God." It recalls the salvation of humanity accomplished by the incarnate Son of God, "the Divine Orient," who sent his apostle to India and dispelled all darkness. For the dedication, the Holy Mass was concelebrated by a great number of priests, twenty of whom distributed Holy Communion to a vast assembly. The pope, "the Supreme Pontiff," had sent a relic, the authenticity of which was ascertained by Archbishop Zacharias. All this speaks of a flourishing Catholic (not Nestorian!) Christianity. However, this inscription is ignored by leading Hindu scholars and only a small fraction of it is published by the Archaeological Survey of India in its Corpus Inscriptionum Indicarum, vol. VII (1978). This is intriguing and adds to the interest of this (temple ?) inscription, which needs to be first published in full, transcribed, translated and then interpreted.…

In Judaism, the only lawgiver is God, while Moses is the mediator between God and brings God's word to the people of Israel. In Christianity, Jesus is the incarnate Word of God. And holy scripture as the word of God contains ius divinum. The Church is the guardian of ius divinum. The laws of the Church apply ius divinum, the theological understanding of which however is varied. Ius divinum does not drop from heaven but is revealed through the history of salvation and has its own history. The idea of ius divinum as merely inhibitive forbidding access to the tree of life is a misconception. The theology of ius divinum is important for the progress of ecumenical relations as well as for the reform of canon law.…

Punto metallico. 33pp -- The current ecumenical search for unity in the Church recognizes the need for a Petrine ministry in the universal Church. The present study explores the typology of Peter in the works of Aphrahat the Persian Sage, the first father of the Syriac Church, who sees Simon Peter as a type. In a first section, all the texts of Aphrahat on Peter are collected. Section two is devoted to an exegetical study of these texts grouped under five heads: Peter as a witness, foundation-rock, under-shepherd, key-holder, and head of the disciples. Peter is all this but is also a type. The typology of Peter was common to the Fathers of the early Church of the East and of the West like Ephrem, Origen and Chrysostom; Tertullian, Cyprian and Augustine (section three). However, in the West the typology of Peter was progressively replaced by the imperial model (section four). For the current ecumenical quest to succeed it seems necessary to recover the Petrine typology so that the primatial Church authority be effectively in the service of the unity of the universal Church according to a recognized model of the exercise of public authority in modern times (fifth section). In conclusion, it would seem that the typology of Peter suggests also a "primacy of repentance" with the papacy taking the lead in ecumenical repentance thus leading to the recovery of unity of a reconciled Church.…
