Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. First edition of Freda Newcombe's important early study of the neuropsychological consequences of focal brain injury, published as part of the Oxford Neurological Monographs series. Based upon Newcombe's extensive investigation of British servicemen who had sustained penetrating missile and… shrapnel wounds to the brain during World War II, the work examines the relationship between the anatomical location of cerebral lesions and resulting psychological and cognitive deficits. Newcombe analyzes general intellectual ability, spatial aptitude, language and naming, visual recognition and closure, memory, and other higher cortical functions, correlating patterns of impairment with unilateral and bilateral cerebral lesions. The volume is illustrated with photographs of injured brains, lesion documentation, visual-perceptual test materials, diagrams, and other figures. vii, 145 pages, with three plates and numerous illustrations and tables. The study became an important contribution to the developing field of clinical neuropsychology and to understanding relationships between localized brain injury and specific cognitive functions. Provenance / Institutional History Deaccessioned copy from the Clendening Medical Library, University of Kansas Medical Center, with institutional stamps, call numbers, labels, circulation material, and book-sale markings. The copyright page bears a Clendening Medical Library / University of Kansas Medical Center acquisition stamp dated February 16, 1970, indicating that the volume entered the medical library shortly after publication. Later Book Sale stamp dated July 24, 1992, documenting institutional deaccession. Condition Good ex-library hardcover without dust jacket. Original dark blue cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. Boards show moderate rubbing, scuffing, surface marks, and general institutional shelf wear. Library call-number label affixed to upper front board. Spine ends and corners show rubbing and minor cloth wear; gilt spine lettering remains clear. Interior binding remains sound. Pages are generally clean and readily readable, with normal age toning. Some staining/toning is visible along the upper edge of the pastedown/endpaper area. Numerous expected former-library markings are present, including stamps, call numbers, accession/barcode labels, circulation card and pocket, and other institutional labels. Title page bears an accession label. No dust jacket. Illustrations and photographic plates remain present and well preserved in the pages examined. Please see photographs for full details of condition and institutional markings. Significance / Collector Appeal Freda Newcombe was an important figure in British clinical neuropsychology. Her Oxford research on servicemen with focal wartime brain injuries provided an unusually valuable population in which discrete cerebral lesions could be correlated with long-term cognitive deficits. Missile Wounds of the Brain grew directly from that research and represents an important early attempt to systematically connect lesion location with impairments in language, perception, spatial ability, memory, and other cognitive functions. Newcombe continued to study these patients for decades, making the work significant within the histories of neuropsychology, behavioral neurology, brain injury, rehabilitation, and cognitive neuroscience. Especially relevant to collections devoted to neurology, neuropsychology, traumatic brain injury, wartime medicine, aphasia, cerebral localization, cognitive neuroscience, and the history of psychology.
