Deuxième édition, dédiée au roi, publiée par C. L. F. Panckoucke. WILLEMIN Nicolas Xavie,r né le 5 août 1763 à Nancy et mort le 23 janvier 1833 à Paris, est un graveur, historien d'art et antiquaire français. Ce texteconnut plusieurs tentatives de traduction avant que Champollion ne parvienne à déchiffrer les hiéroglypheset àtraduire intégralement les inscriptions. Il s'agit d'un décret datant de 197-196 avant J.-C., commémorant l'accession au trône du pharaon Ptolémée V, le remerciant pour les nombreux cadeaux qu'il fit aux temples durant son règne. Il est question également de réduction des impôts, de libération de prisonniers. Il comprit que les inscriptions démotiques, le troisième système d'écriture figurant sur la stèle, entre le grec et les hyéroglyphes égyptiens véhiculaient les syllabes et que les hiéroglyphes représentaient les phonèmes coptes. Le démotique est une simplification du hiératique, lui-même simplification des hiéroglyphes.

Leather spine is fragile, desiccated leather. Hinges starting. Boards are moderately worn with rubbing to extremities. Gilt call tag #140 pasted to proper right top corner of front board. Remnants of old call tag on spine. Ex-Libris E. Foulc on front pastedown. Front gutter tender. Plates themselves are very well preserved. Ample margins, slightly thumbed with only a few brown spots. All are frame-worthy, although we strongly recommend keeping these in their current state. Plates are numbered 1-60. Please see photos. A gorgeous book of classic Greek art objects. The French printmaker, Xavier Nicolas Willemin specialized in prints of archeological and historical objects. Edmund Foulc provenance. Foulc (1828-1916) was a Businessman and important art collector. Le corps original de la reliure a été conservé. Bel exemplaire avec seulement qq. tâches minimes et éparses (vraiment négligable pour un grand ouvrage comme ceci). Référence; Colas 3085 (= Lipperheide 109). Brunet V 1453. Cohen 1016. Vinet 1813. L'ouvrage parait en livraisons. Les planches 1-14 concernent l'Egypte et la Lybie, les planches 15-28 Phenice-Perse. Toutes les autres planches sont relatives à la Grèce.L'intention de l'auteur était de rassembler une iconographie fiable pour les artistes. La publication se situe ainsi dans le grand mouvement de la redécouverte du monde antique - le nouveau classicisme et Premier Empire.
