Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and legal legacy of William Noye, a prominent lawyer and politician during a pivotal period in English history. While acknowledging his undeniable talent and expertise, the author grapples with Noye's controversial shift in political allegiance, ultimately questioning the allure of power and its ability to corrupt even the most principled individuals. Through a biographical sketch and a reprint of one of Noye's earliest works, "A Treatise of the Principal Grounds and Maxims of the Laws of England," the book explores not only his legal brilliance but also his role in shaping the tumultuous events leading up to the English Civil War. Noye's early career was marked by his staunch defense of parliamentary privilege and opposition to the arbitrary exercise of royal power. However, his appointment as Attorney General under King Charles I saw him become a fervent advocate for the crown, even proposing the highly contested "ship money" tax that ultimately sparked widespread public resistance. By examining Noye's life and work within the context of his time, the author invites us to consider the complexities of human nature and the often-murky intersection of law, politics, and personal ambition. This book ultimately serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us that even the most celebrated legal minds can be swayed by the temptations of power, with potentially devastating consequences for the principles they once held dear.
