Second book, published when he was 19 (his first, "Caesar: The Story of a Panda Leopard," was published when he was 16) by the author who would later change his name to Patrick O'Brian, best-known for his Aubrey-Maturin novels of Nelson's navy. Color frontispiece and eight B&W internal (matte) illustrations are all firmly in place. "Good plus" original dust jacket is price-clipped, and is missing a narrow, 3-1/2 X 3/8- inch strip from bottom of rear panel, affecting no text. Previous owner's name, "Ivor G.M.G. Dorward," stamped to bottom of FFE and also to bottom page edges. Ivor Gardiner Menzies Gordon Dorward (1927-1983) grew up to become a prominent architect in Glasgow. The first two "Richard Russ" books are sought-after by O'Brian collectors. We also offer illustrator Tunnicliffe's "Sketches of Bird Life," separately. 84 pp. This volume now reduced from $350.

There is a small gift inscription to the front end-paper. The pages are toned otherwise clean throughout. Thirteen short stories about countryside: several with a theme of fishing and fox-hunting in Ireland and Snowdonia, The Drawing Of The Curranwood Badgers, and the others on wild-fowling, shooting and poaching. Patrick O'Brian was born Richard Patrick Russ, changing his name by deed-poll in 1945. He wrote several books under his birth-name and a great number as Patrick O'Brian.
