[++] The work done here in these three papers by Kermack and McKendrick laid the foundation for modern epidemiology and helped in understanding the dynamics of infectious disease outbreaks. They introduced what is now known as the Kermack-McKendrick epidemic model (also known as the Kermack-McKendrick theory or the Susceptible-Infectious-Removed (SIR) model), which is a compartmental model that divides a population into different compartments. The model's basic idea is that the population moves between these compartments over time based on the transmission dynamics of the disease. It assumes that the total population size remains constant, neglecting births and deaths unrelated to the disease.
