Wetmore & Co., / Booksellers / and / Stationers. / Yokohama, Japan" giving rise to the speculation that this English bookseller in Japan [Yokohama was not opened to foreign trade until 1859] would stock this title for visiting Western naval personnel, who battled the spread of venereal disease amongst their crew. Modest wear, spine a bit darkened. Bookseller label to front paste-down. Prior owner name stamp to t.p. [George R. Brush, a USN physician, 1861 - 1894].
