Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good-. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. First Edition. [slight damage to lower corner of rear cover, small triangular brown area at upper left corner of front cover (matching chip in jacket), light age-toning to edges of text block; the jacket is edgeworn and lightly soiled, with shallow paper loss at spine ends, aforementioned chip at upper left corner of front panel, soiling along edges of rear flap, old internal tape-repair to front flapfold]. (B&W photographs) SIGNED (no inscription) by the author on the front endpaper. Memoir by a slight late-comer to the "Jewish-immigrant-from-Eastern-Europe-becomes-big-shot Hollywood-producer" sweepstakes. Pasternak was born in Hungary in 1901, making him a generation or more younger than the first wave of early Hollywood moguls (Adolph Zukor, Louis B. Mayer, Lewis J. Selznick, et al.). He came to the U.S. as a teenager, developed a fascination with the movies, and worked his way up from busboy to assistant director at various studios during the 1920s. He made his first important mark as a producer in Europe from 1928 through the mid-1930s, first in Germany (to which he was sent by Universal Studios) and a bit later in his native Hungary, where he went after the Nazis came to power. Returning to Hollywood in 1936, he struck it lucky when he discovered the young singer/actress Deanna Durbin, with whom he eventually produced ten films for Universal. He later moved to MGM, remaining there for fourteen years (he departed the same year this book was published), then returned to Europe and remained active until the late 1960s. Signed by Author.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Easy the Hard Way is a full-life story told with gusto, often hilarious, sometimes touching. It will bring a lump to your throat when you least expect it. Joe Pasternak emerges from the pages of his autobiography as an imaginative and resourceful man of tremendous drive and honesty, who is also a warm and deeply human talent.Pasternak's early life reads like the script of an American dream picture: born in a tiny town in Transylvania, son of the shammas at the local synagogue, at seventeen Joe threw off the shackles and made his way to Philadelphia. He knew no English, knew in fact little of anything, but he had sense enough, he writes, to go to New York. The rise of Joe Pasternak was not always in a straight ascending line, but sooner or later it always landed him one rung higher. From Paramount in Jamaica he went to Universal in Hollywood and thence to Europe to supervise Universal's operations abroad before the war. Those were the great days of movie making in Germany and Pasternak played an important part in them. As a producer he is credited with helping such great stars as Deanna Durbin, Judy Garland, Mario Lanza and others to achieve stardom in Hollywood. This item is printed on demand.
