Ha fornito importanti contributi alla fisica teorica dello stato solido (effetto Hall anomalo, conduzione del calore nei cristalli non metallici, interazioni fononiche, diamagnetismo dei metalli), del nucleo (sistema neutrone-protone, reazioni e risonanze nucleari), della diffusione di particelle, delle interazioni "non locali". Peierls stesso, nella prefazione, chiarisce le ragioni che lo hanno indotto a scrivere il libro: le domande del pubblico che, alle sue conferenze su temi specifici, chiedeva chiarimenti e richiami alle nozioni base della fisica che tornava, con piacere, ad illustrare in un linguaggio semplice, abituale, Con poco uso di formule o conteggi.
