See the photos (made with mylar protector in place). 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". This historical non-fiction work tells the aftermath of a fatal shootout between FBI agents and American Indians near Wounded Knee, North Dakota that resulted in two FBI agents and one Indian killed. Leonard Peltier, an American Indian, was convicted of murder and sentenced to two life sentences. The author wrote in the Introduction, "Whatever the nature and degree of his participation at Oglala, the ruthless persecution of Leonard Peltier had less to do with his own actions than with underlying issues of history, racism, and economics, in particular, Indian sovereignty claims and growing opposition to massive energy development on treaty lands and dwindling reservations." Immediately the book was published in 1983, it was suppressed by several libel suits. Eventually, all of the lawsuits were resolved in favor of the author and publisher, resulting in this Second Edition (with a new ISBN) which includes the Epilogue by Matthiessen discussing the post-publication legal events and also an Afterword by Attorney Marcus Garbus, who participated in some of the lawsuits.
