Piatt, a young, wealthy self-made businessman and banker from Cincin…nati and a good friend of William Henry Harrison, felt it his duty to help the United States army during the War of 1812. He met with James Monroe, Secretary of War in Washington and was assured that the government will reimburse the costs after the war. The government was practically bankrupt and never paid Piatt his $600,000. John Hooper Piatt, died in debtors' prison, age 39. His case was finally resolved in 1875.
