I due contendenti alla cattedra erano Pietro Sampolo e Antonino Sciascia: "il lavoro del Sampolo appare di piu' ampio respiro, espressione di una cultura inserita nei circuiti europei dell'epoca, mentre quello di Sciacia sembra ancora legato ai modelli di erudizione settecentesca" (cfr. A. Cocchiara, Vito La Mantia e gli studi storico-giuridici nella Sicilia dell'Ottocento, 1999, p. 105). Il concorso fu poi vinto da Sampolo. ITA.
