Also included are chapters on Native Americans, Mormons, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads, Yosemite, and brief historical sketches treating such subjects as the settlement of the West and the Louisiana Purchase. With 20 illustrated plates (a few of them evocative of/copying from Catlin and Bodmer), including a pictorial title page showing a "View of the Pacific Railroad" Great Salt Lake, Caverns, etc, etc.

Pine was a surveyor and civil engineer who surveyed the Niagara route to the west coast in 1865-67 on behalf of railroad and shipping magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. Here he provides a firsthand account of the natural wonders and frontier settlements encountered during his trip. Includes chapters on the American buffalo, Native American tribes, railroads, mining, hot springs, Yosemite Valley, etc. He also mentions the Mormon settlements in Utah, which were established twenty years or less before his visit.
