ISBN-13: 9781616196752. ISBN-10: 1616196750. Murdered By Her Doctor? Podvia, Mark W. The Strange Case of Dr. Paul Schoeppe. Clark, New Jersey: Talbot Publishing, 2022. xv, 147 pp., 8 black & white illustrations. ISBN-13: 9781616196752. ISBN-10: 1616196750. Paperback. New. $24.95 * Maria Steinnecke, a wealthy spinster, died in the central Pennsylvania borough of Carlisle on January 28, 1869. At first her death was not considered suspicious. That changed when her doctor, Paul Schoeppe, presented a will in his handwriting; it said she had left her entire estate to him. Soon afterwards, an autopsy performed on Miss Steinnecke revealed traces of prussic acid, a deadly poison. Thus began the murder case of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Paul Schoeppe, an event that brought national and international attention to Carlisle. Found guilty, Dr. Schoeppe would come within days of his execution before the efforts of America's physicians and the German-American community combined to force a second trial that ultimately freed him. Exciting events at the time, the two trials of Dr. Schoeppe forever changed the way that medical evidence was presented and appeals were conducted in criminal cases. Mark W. Podvia is a member of the emeritus faculty of the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University. Following his retirement from Penn State, he served as University Librarian and Law Library Co-Director at the West Virginia University College of Law, where he retired in 2021. He is a graduate of Grove City College, the Pennsylvania State University, Clarion University and the Dickinson School of Law. Mark has published over 75 articles and reviews in various law reviews and journals. He is co-author of A Citizen's Guide to a Modern Constitutional Convention.

Originally published: Carlisle: Printed by George Fleming, 1831. 3 volumes. xvi, 508; xiv, 544; viii, 572 pp. Reprinted 2006 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. With a New Introduction by William E. Butler, John Edward Fowler Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of the Vinogradoff Institute at the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law and Emeritus Professor of Comparative Law at University College London; Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and Mark W. Podvia, Associate Law Librarian and Archivist, Dickinson School of Law, Pennsylvania State University. ISBN-13: 9781584777113. ISBN-10: 1584777117. Hardcover. New. $150. * Reprint of the first and only edition. In 1834 John Reed [1786-1850], President Judge of the Courts of Common Pleas of the Ninth Judicial District of Pennsylvania, founded Dickinson School of Law, the oldest law school in Pennsylvania. This eminent jurist probably wrote this work as a text for his students. It is a fascinating document of the American reception of Blackstone. Like Tucker's Commentaries on the Laws of Virginia (1831-32), this work follows the arrangement of Books I-III of Blackstone's Commentaries. Portions of Blackstone's text, enclosed in quotation marks and stripped of their footnotes, alternate with original material on Pennsylvanian and, to some extent, federal law. (References, including case and statutory citations, are included in the text.) Laeuchli, A Bibliographical Catalog of William Blackstone 148.
