Schaffter was an Iowa State Senator, as printer of the local newspaper. The Council of Trent took place in the mid sixteenth century (nearly a hundred years before this, third, edition was published). It was the Catholic response to the Reformation & rise of Protestantism, This copy of the Council (counsel) of Trent was published amidst the Bishops Wars in England, as King Charles made (or attempted to make) sweeping reforms within the Church of England. It was during this early seventeenth century religious unrest that the Pilgrims fled for the new world & the relative religious calm of the Elizabethan era was disrupted. This edition is dedicated to the King by the translator, who makes special mention of the first Bishops of Rome, calling them "quacksalving juglers."
