Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: vg. First edition. Quarto. XIII, [1], 338pp. Original printed paper covered boards. Publisher's logo on title page. In this captivating work, Benjamin Pollock argues that Franz Rosenzweig's "The Star of Redemption" is devoted to a singularly ambitious philosophical task: grasping "the All" - the whole of what is - in the form of a system. In asserting Rosenzweig's abiding commitment to a systematic conception of philosophy often identified with German Idealism, this book breaks rank with the assumptions about Rosenzweig's thought that have dominated the scholarship of the last decades. Indeed, the Star's importance is often claimed to lie precisely in the way it opposes philosophy's traditional drive for systematic knowledge and upholds instead a "new thinking" attentive to the existential concerns, the alterity, and even the revelatory dimension of concrete human life. Pollock shows that these very innovations in Rosenzweig's thought are in fact to be understood as part and parcel of The Star's systematic program. But this is only the case, Pollock claims, because Rosenzweig approaches philosophy's traditional task of system in a radically original manner. For the Star not only seeks to guide its readers on the path toward knowing "the All" of which all beings are a part; it at once directs them toward realizing the redemptive unity of that very "All" through the actions, decisions, and relations of concrete human life (from the publishers). Binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Five items. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. ONE: Three Autograph Letters Signed (all 'E. L. Pollock') to W. H. Prince. A total of 6pp. The writer, 'Miss E. L. Pollock', is Benjamin Pollock's daughter Louise, who with her sister Selina managed the shop after his death. All three letters are written in 1944, the year in which the sisters sold the stock to the bookseller Alan Keen. The letters respond to enquiries regarding the stock, and one (12 May 1944) includes an itemised bill of twelve items 'Bought of Pollock's late B Pollock | 73. Hoxton St. London. N.1.' The letter concludes: 'I seem to remember your name as I have been many years now in the shop, ever since my brother died of wounds in the last war, he was learning all parts with Dad, & no doubt would have carried on.' On the reverse of an earlier letter (17 April 1944) is a long list of 'plays I have complete with book of words'. The third letter (26 May 1944) reads: 'I am sorry to say I have no more complete plays only those I sent you, no doubt I should have more of the odd sheets, but I should have to get you to make out a list of the odd ones I sent you, as I do not want to repeat them. I have not a book of words for Silver Palace, as it has been out of print for some years now.' TWO: Duplicated 'List of Plays and Pantomimes with prices complete with books of words.' Under the heading: 'B. Pollock | Juvenile Theatrical Print Publisher | 73 Hoxton Street, N. | Established upwards of 50 Years.' 1p., 8vo. In two columns in facsimile of handwriting. Additional information added in Louisa Pollock's hand, with note: 'Early closing day. Thursdays 1. o'clock.' THREE: Uncoloured engraved illustration of the frontage of the original shop (founded by Benjamin Pollock's father-in-law John Redington), 208 Hoxton Street, with name above door: 'J. REDINGTON, | PRINTER, BOOKBINDER & STATIONER'. 1p., landscape 8vo. On thin paper. At foot: 'London. Published by B. Pollock, 73, Hoxton Street, Hoxton.' At head: 'Scene 8. Pollock's Scenes in Baron Munchausen No. 8.'.

Verlag: Printed and published by B. Pollock, 73, Hoxton Street, N., [London], 1895
Wrappers. Zustand: Fine-. A rare, complete nineteenth-century Benjamin Pollock toy theater. Foolscap 8vo (168 x 108 mm): 16pp, with nine hand-colored plates (219 x 173 mm), as called for on title page ("4 Plates Characters, 3 Scenes, 2 Wings [Nos. 5 & 8]"). String-stitched paper self-wrappers; plates still stitched, as issued. Slight marginal chipping to plates, but an excellent example of a scarce survival. Not in Speaight. The Blue Jackets was first performed at the Adelphi Theatre, in the West End, in 1838. This toy theater, produced as a souvenir of a live performance, was adapted from the original stage production for a young audience. The lithographed plates illustrating characters, costumes, and scenes, as well as "side wings to suit any play," were intended to be cut out and dramatized using the accompany libretto, condensed to 16 pages. Toy theaters were undated, so pinpointing the actual year of this production is difficult, especially because many plates were resold to successive publishers, who reissued the dramas under their own names. (The putative date of this toy theater, as published by Pollock, is from the catalog of Ohio State University's microfilmed copy of the original at the Victoria & Albert Museum.) Pollock's, one of the oldest toy shops in London, had its origins in Hoxton, in 1851, and was taken over in 1877 by Benjamin Pollock, who ran it until his death in 1937, selling toy theaters for "a penny plain, two pence coloured." The business was struggling until Robert Louis Stevenson visited the shop in 1884 and later wrote in an essay, "If you love art, folly or the bright eyes of children, speed to Pollock's." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books and ephemera in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
