A conspiration (allegedly) made an assassination attempt on king Joseph I of Portugal on 3 Sept. 1758. This gave the marquis de Pombal the opportunity to eliminate the Távora family and expel the Jesuit order. B and C. There was a war on between Portugal and Spain on the one hand and the Indians and the Jesuits on the other. C. was originally written in Portugese by Sebastião Jose de Caravalho e Melo de Pombal, (Marquis of Pombal 1699 - 1782), Portugese minister of Foreign Affairs under King José I . The translation is by Pierre Olivier Pinault.
