In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Alexandria, VA: America's Promise - The Alliance For Youth, 1999. First Edition and presumed only printing. Quarto, wraps,643 numbered pages. Basically a hefty, large octavo, but technically quarto. Near fine; some small scale curling at a couple corners, otherwise no salient flaws. S…harp. A scarce copy from the organization Colin Powell founded in 1997 "to help children and youth from all socioeconomic sectors" in the United States. Reportto the Nation 1999 is primarily a detailed listing of all the organizations that had committed, to that point, to take part in the mission of America's Promise. And a lot of them there were, and there is herein from 1/2 page to a full page for each one. There's also a message from Chairman Powell, and several articles detailing progress on various fronts. Essentially, a thorough almanac on the organization through 1999. American cultural history, in an excellently preserved and very scarce specimen. L60.

Cloth. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, xviii, 453pp, [2]. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. Full number line on copyright page. Solid text block, a fine example. In the publisher's dust jacket, $24.95 retail price on front flap, touch of shelf wear, a fine example. Inscr…ibed on the front free endpaper "14 January 1992 / To General Powell - With great respect. We tried to tell not only the commanders' stories, but those of the grunts as well. Hope we've done you all justice. - Tom Donnelly." The invasion of Panama in 1989 was the first application of the Powell Doctrine, named for the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which called for the use of overwhelming force and a clear objective before committing troops. In his autobiography, Powell states that "the reputation of the American armed forces was on the line" in Operation Just Cause. General Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell. Inscribed to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell, first edition of Operation Just Cause by Thomas Donnelly. (illustrator). Signed.

In den WarenkorbPaper. Zustand: Near fine. Signed Photograph. Color photograph in white matte, measures 10" x 12", detached cover with the "Joint Chiefs of Staff" seal in gilt. This photograph appeared in Edward Perkins' book, Mr. Ambassador: Warrior for Peace (2006), on page 484. Inscribed in black pen: "To Ed Perkins, With admiration and than…ks for your example of selfless service. Best wishes, Colin L. Powell." Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year. Signed photograph of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell, with the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Edward J. Perkins. Two groundbreaking political leaders in African American history. (illustrator). Signed.

In den WarenkorbPhotograph. Zustand: Fine. Signed Photograph. This color photograph was taken by White House photographer Bob McNeely in the White House Residence Treaty Room, during a "working breakfast meeting" on the situation in Haiti. Also in attendance at the meeting were President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Vice President Al Gore, Tony Lake… and Leon Panetta. This meeting was followed by a press conference the same day. Photograph is signed in the border along the bottom and measures 8" x 10". A fine piece, capturing an important diplomatic victory for the Clinton Administration and former President Jimmy Carter. Operation Uphold Democracy was in response to the 1991 Haitian coup d'état, where the democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was deposed by Army General Raoul Cédras. In 1994, a delegation led by former President Jimmy Carter, along with Senator Sam Nunn and General Colin Powell, urged Provisional President Émile Jonassaint and General Cédras to relinquish control or face an invasion by the 82nd Airborne Division. President Aristide returned to power in October 1994, with a UN peacekeeping force remaining in Haiti until 2000. Presidential briefing on Operation Uphold Democracy at the White House on September 19, 1994, photograph signed by former President Jimmy Carter, Senator Sam Nunn, General Colin Powell and President Bill Clinton. (illustrator). Signed.
