Die Einflussfaktoren der Globalisierung sowie der Wertewandel in der modernen Gesellschaft verursachen eine Strukturveränderung der öffentlichen und zum Teil privaten Räume.Diese Veränderung äussert sich vor allem darin, dass der Druck auf öffentliche Räume wächst, da neue Angebote ihren Platz im urbanen Raum finden, welche sich den Bedürfnissen der modernen Gesellschaft anpassen. Dabei handelt es sich vor allem um sogenannte 'privatöffentliche' Räume, die Öffentlichkeit suggerieren obwohl sie von Privaten betrieben werden. Zudem wird dem Konsum ein erhöhter Stellenwert beigemessen, weshalb öffentlicher Raum zu wirtschaftlichen Zwecken veräussert wird.Diese Entwicklungen führen zu einem Verschwimmen zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Raum, wobei die Definition des öffentlichen Raumes für die Beurteilung der Problematik eine grosse Rolle spielt.Eine Analyse der relevanten Literatur in Verbindung mit einer Fallstudie über die Stadt Basel zeigt auf, dass die Städte ihr Verhalten an dasjenige von Unternehmen anpassen, um im globalen Standortwettbewerb mitzuhalten. Dies führt zur Kommerzialisierung der Räume und somit auch zu Inklusions und Exlusionsprozessen zwischen den einzelnen Schichten der Gesellschaft.Die Entwicklungstendenzen zeigen, dass zu der geografischen Perspektive, die eine 'Privatisierung der öffentlichen Räume' beschreibt, eine soziologische Perspektive hinzutreten muss. Die Betrachtung der Entwicklungstendenzen in diesem Bereich zeigt, dass eine 'Privatisierung des öffentlichen Lebens' stattfindet.
